Bearing noise help

Featured Replies

Hi I have a skoda fabia 1.4 mpi 8v 2000 W reg, I have had a strange noise coming from the fount left wheel, it sounds like a bearing noise but the noise is at it worse when turning right at 30mph+. Also at 40mph+ light braking in a straight line I get a the a wobble in the steering wheel. The tracking is slight out as it veers to the left a bit if the steering wheel is straight but shouldn’t make a horrible noise, you can feel the vibrations through the floor pan. It has just been in for a MOT with the above problem and still passed with flying colours. I have asked a few friends what they think and keep getting different answers. Someone said it could be tyres and wheel balancing – so just ruled that one out have had the spare balanced with a new tyre on still the same.

Any help will be much appreciated, also iam new to this so i hope it post is in the right place.

Thanks is advance, Paul

Sounds like you have a duff wheel bearing mate. They always seem to go on that particular corner in my experiance. If your steering wheel is shaking when braking that will be your front discs warped.

Probably got hot and damaged the wheel bearing or vice versa.

I would put a new set of front disc's and pads in. If it's still humming do the bearing.

Offside wheel bearings, IMHO!

Just done them myself on my 1.4 MPI do both sides if possible.

How much did it cost and is it a DIY job.

The hub (which incorporates the bearings) cost £52 each from Euro Car Spares.

It is a tasty DIY job with the right tools, I used a gear puller from Halfords to push the drive shaft backwards first (probably not the right method but it worked) out of the hub.

Then I unbolted the anti roll bar bush, the steering bush and the wishbone bush to remove the steering knuckle (where the wheel hub is pressed into) using a jack to support the wishbone.

I then used a 14 pound sledge hammer and a lot of heat to remove the old hub from the knuckle using a steel frame to support it.

New hub in the fast freeze for 2 hours and a jigged engineers vice to insert new hub.

If you have the Tools its not a bad job to do yourself, otherwise I guess a garage is going to be 2/3 hours labour.

Good luck
