Incorrectly sized tyres on a trackday....

Featured Replies

Mods feel free to move if you think this would be better placed elsewhere but after opinions on the above.

By father-in-law has offered me the use of his delacquered recently replaced VW Montreal 2's for whaever i see fit - be it refurbing and fitting to the Fabia or use on track days.

As good as the Montreals look (thanls L-Y-K ) the cost of having them refurbed is too much and I reckon these would be perfect for track days (subject to going on the 312's!) as due to the dreadful condition already, abuse on track won't really make their condition any worse.

However they have 55 or possibly 65 profile tyres on rather than the Fabia standard 45, obviously i am aware of the speedo overreading and eventual incorrect mileage if used for a period of time on the road but would it be the worst thing ever if i spent a day on them on track??

Sounds like a good reason to go out and kill them on the track :D

No harm running them if they dont rub.

Higher top speed! \o/ Haha...

It could actually prove to be an advantage, the car isn't good enough to go around some of the tightest corners in third gear as it is too slow and second gear you're having to change up almost immediately after the corner which is annoying. If you're going a couple of mph faster at 4000rpm you may even have a slight advantage out of the tighter corners when in 2nd gear.. :D

I think you might rub. It's like trying to use 225/45 R17 tyres on the fabia - Not good. Might be fine in a straight line, but corners could be interesting.

No harm trialling them though to at least know for sure..

PS: Tighter corners at Hullavington will be taken in third by me. ;) From your video I think most of them look doable at about 35-40mph.

I sold some wheels once to a guy with a MK4 Ibiza with 225/45/17 tyres on.

They fitted, but on full lock they rubbed on the base of the spring seat on the strut.

So they were down right dangerous.

I'd be very wary.

Ideal :D - thanks all!!

Hullavington on the 31st will be run on 205/45/16's anyhow and dependant on the state of them at the end of the day they may do another event or be binned

next time i'm down in Cornwall i will pop the Montreals on and see if there is any rubbing!

and Ed 4000rpm?! i don't think so

Cliff if you don't take the car to decent revs then I'll be faster than you in a car with 40 less horses :D

I expect with your superior track experience you'll be faster anyhow - and of course that wouldn't be a problem................. ish :)

As with Combe i currently have best laid plans to take it easy although i'm sure the red mist will decend on the day - especially if i have to commute there in a transit with quarter of a million miles on the clock! :P

And remember at certain points my other half will be behind the wheel so if you see a red Fabia going slowly it is most defeinetly her not me! ;)

Remember that it is not a competition though! I need to remind myself that otherwise I will end up driving outside my limits and will cause an accident :(

the last thing i wanna do is cause an accident with anyone else or even an incident involving just me!!

There's seeing if you can keep up/pull away and then there's going for aggressive unacknowledged overtakes, I know which i shall be doing! :D
