rattle from behind timing cover

Featured Replies

Hi guys i hav a mk1 octy vrs and just noticed the other day that am getting a small rattle from what i think is behind the timing belt cover. I had the timing belt and tensioners changed about 8k ago and have just noticed this noise the other day. any one any ideas what to check for before i take the cover off to have a look?

Any help much appreciated

Hello

I had the same thing recently, it seemed to rattle most when reved and returning to idle it turned out to be the tensioner.

When i removed the cover the belt was tight started and ran the car, turned it off again and the belt was loose.

Ive not long had the car so was going to ge the belt done anyway but after 8k id take it back to where it was done.

Hope this helps

gonna have a quick look myself and if it is the tensioner i will take it back and get them to fix it.

You don't say if the water pump was changed at the same time as the timing belt,(this is common practice as the impellor is made of plastic and has a history of breaking up). This could be the noise you are hearing.

Yeah thats a very good point when i had mine done id bought a water pump for them to do at the same time and its a good job i did because after they had done the work they told me as they removed the old water pump it fell apart in their hands

got to the bottom of this problem tonight took off timing belt cover and its only belt noise. Jacked up the car and put it gear and spun the wheel by hand and its the timing belt. thats a little squeeky. Checked tension and all is well just something am gonna need to live with i suppose.

Put in some fresh oil and filter whislt i was at it.
