Has anybody driven the 1.6 TDi yet?

Featured Replies

We're thinking about taking advantage of the scrappage scheme and getting rid of my 1999 Octavia TDi and getting a new 1.6 TDi Octavia because the tax is £35 a year. Has anybody driven one of these yet? What are they like compared to the 1.9 TDi PD Octavia II?

It's just speculation but I'd expect it to be smoother , a bit more linear in power delivery and more economical.

Like you I'm interested to see what it's *actually* like.

I'm looking at ordering one soon. I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get a test drive though. I'm not looking forward to losing 35 BHP, but I love the economy figures and the £35 a year tax sounds good as well. I suppose when you think that an 80 BHP diesel was considered good not so long ago, it's far from being underpowered.

Well I went from a PD140 Octavia to a Fiat Bravo with a 1.6 TDI engine that's very similar to the VAG offering on paper. It's 105bhp with similar torque and also fits into the £35 tax bracket.

I did need to adjust my driving style a bit to hold onto lower gears a while longer , but you soon get used to it didn't feel *under*powered.

I sincerely hope its much better than that Fiat Sh**e I had in my Vauxhall Corsa.........

You can find an early assessment of it on the 'VW Audi Forum' site via the current Mk6 Golf.

Enter 'Forum' then scroll down to specific model and select 'Golf Mk 6 - 2009- '

Only one person's views though.

I thought they had Isuzu engines fitted in those

Would also like to try the Octy 1.6Tdi.

Corsa 1.3 CDTI engine joint venture between GM and Fiat, the wife's Corsa has this unit, wiring harness labelled 'JTD'.

It's a little on the noisy side has a tenancy to make some strange wining sounds every-soften, oh and has an appetite for A/C compressors on it's 4th. in 2.5 years.

Current Corsa also shares floorpan and other components with the Punto.

Re the VAG 1.6 sorry not driven it but did read somewhere that the reviewer felt it was less refined than they expected but otherwise OK.
