central convenience, good garage

Featured Replies

Just something that may help someone else out there, I have just had an electrical problem which manifested as the electric windows doing odd things, progressing onto failure of the windows and electric mirrors. Also the LED in the door ceased to function.

When i got the fault codes read there was an intermittent communication error with this part.

The root of this problem was the central convenience unit located behind the headlight on off switch in the dashboard. It is a fairly easy part to change (testing is by substitution);

To remove the part;

1) Remove the cover to the fuse panel

2) undo the 2 torx screws that hold the fuse box in place

3) Remove all the visible torx screws holding the section of dash in place (it will not come off yet as there is one behind the headlight switch)

4) Push the fuse box into the dash and push the headlight switch out from behind, the whole switch and adjusters come out as one. This is a bit fiddly to do.

5) Remove the final torx screw that is now visible

6) The lower dash section will now come away.

7) The central convenience unit can now be accessed, its held in on a small bracket by 2 more torx screws.

Refit in the reverse order, getting the fuse box to line up is a tad of a fiddle but not too bad.

Secondly, a great garage in Bristol, Streetwise Automotive, really helpfull, got all the time in the world for you. Will deffinaltely be using them again, an uber helpfull garage whom i rate highly. :thumbup:

Good stuff glad you got it sorted, running a diagnostic on the unit rather than 'trial by substitution' (which is not really mechanicing, but as a last resort sometimes has to be done) is useful though as not all customers can afford for a convenience unit to be ordered and paid for at Skoda prices, coded to your car (they have varying options which have to be set in the short/long coding normally) to find out it's a wiring issue.

If you get this fault again, remove the drivers door panel and check the motor and wiring to the window motor for corrosion. I have seen a few faults like this on OCT 1 vehicles

Yeah, I had a little look in the door first to check for water in the module, although was all clear. Someone has deffinately been in there before though judging by the amount of cuts in the waterproof membrane!!

Having my windows back has made life alot easier!!! My odd problem of the window winding up then coming back down has resurfaced though so I am assuming there is a sensor doing silly things somewhere, and it didn't solve the passenger lock popping back up when locked from inside, so more investigation is needed on these maybe a job for the weekend.

I never had my unit recoded though as it came off the same car (from a breakers) seems to work though, I assumed the immobiliser wouldn't like the new unit....

While I'm thinking about it too, I have found a good breakers that will post, the web address is VRS Home reasonable priced and good service :) the unit itself was £50 (ex VAT) which I though was pretty good.

Cheers,

Mark
