Dog slow VRS

Featured Replies

Took my wifes PD170 VRS out today i dont often drive it but it felt really really slow , the turbo was working but taking a while to build boost and it just felt flat , it used to smoke the tyres in second but no worries of it even doing that in first at the moment

Was going to check the air filter as its coming up for a service soon anyhow was also thinking about putting some millers in it as well , anything else worth checking???

I used to find that if the car had been driven slowly for a while then that was the way it behaved...(the ecu adapts to your driving style) ...give it a bit of welly and it will soon come back on song

Most likely the MAF. Undo the MAF connector, then take car for a spin. If performance is just as bad, then mostly duff MAF. It's a simple DIY fit if you have the correct size star driver.

Some dealers sell recon units for 1/2 the new price.

PS no harm changing air filter anyway.

Had the same issue with my Punto although it was accompanied by LOADS of smoke. Turned out to be MAF.............

Will it still boost with a faulty maf?? My Mercedes went inot limp home mode when the maf failed

If you take out the plug from the MAF the car will go into limp. like previous poster said if performance doesn't change - you have 100% duff MAF. If the performance gets even worse, then maybe you have it the way I did - MAF was partially broken.

My furby was feeling lazy, took it to one dealer - they plugged it in and no fault codes. then told me off and said everything was fine. I felt betrayed and visited another dealer, they actually put the car on wires while it was running and checked the MAF readings. the readings were totally off this planet.. so MAF was working but giving wrong number -> lazy engine, but no fault code!

mine feels like this as well, but a little better since new air filter. I'm a complete novice in the mechanics dept, so can someone please explain what the maf is, and is it easy for a novice to replace or is it a garage job:confused: cheers all:thumbup:

oh dear, no response-it really must have been a numpty question

Mass Air Flow sensor, but don't ask me where it is :P

The MAF is a real easy part to change. I have done it in my Audi, and it took about 30 mins. However, before you do this, it might be worth trying to clean the throttle body. I have an Audi, and a few months after I first bought it, had the same problem - poor acceleration, fluttering, sluggish - after weeks of trying stuff (including changing the MAF), i read about cleaning the throttle body. Apparently the throttle body gets clogged with Carbon, and this can cause the car to run slugglish. so I payed a garage £20 to clean it - and it was amazing - the car drove like new again.

So now, every year when I get my MOT/Service done, I get the throttle body cleaned - so I never have this problem.

The PD doesn't have a throttle body, does it??

ta for that. i wouldn't have had a clue to know where to look but my mechanical knowledge has definately improved after spending (according to my wife) too much time on this board :D

A known maintenance good practice is to detach the sensor plug, lube with white dielectric grease and replug.

HTH

I'd start with the OP's first hunch; check the air filter plus the rest of the airbox for debris blocking airflow, get some good fuel (shell vPower) and Millers (diesel sport4) into the tank and then go for a bit of a burn. :D

Good luck.

PS> what mileage have you got on the car? as IIRC the MAF only really starts playing up on high mileage cars (80,000+) as it has had the opportunity to get gummed up by then.

PPS> How slow is 'dog slow'? It surely can't be that bad or your wife would have mentioned it to you.
