alternater removal

Featured Replies

I have got a 2000 felicia 1300 mpi with a power steering hose leak and from what I can see to replace it (pump to rack) the alternater needs to be removed but how do you keep the tension off the belt ? I know to turn the end of the tensioner roller but is there away locking it off ? Help please its starting to do my head in.

not sure what you mean about keepin the tension off the belt, only thing i can think of is the alternator pivot.the alternator itself doesn't take more than 5 minutes to remove think its only 2 (nuts and bolts)

Doesn't the one with power steering have a separate tensioner (and a static alternator)? In that case, I think you just need to take the tension off using a lever/spanner, and then slip the belt off of one of the pulleys and let the tensioner release; although I've not done one of those, all the other cars I've had with those sort of setups haven't had a "lock" on them.

on the vw engined ones theres a small hole you can insert a drill bit through to lock it off, but i'm not overly familiar with the 1.3 engines, but as said above just slip the belt off completely to get it out of the way, it's worth drawing a sketch to show the routing of the belt too:O

dont forget you will need to bleed the PAS pump when you have finished replacing the hoses and re-filled the fluid, you can do this by turning the steering lock to lock with the wheels off the floor holding it at each lock for a few seconds and with the cap off the resovoir

Yeah, deffo - the number of times I've had people tell me they knew how it was supposed to go back on, and then call me when they can't work it out!
