Oil level check question

Featured Replies

In the manual it states the 1.2 60hp should be checked when cold, but no mention of the 70hp I have. Im assuming the 70hp needs checking the same? Only when I check cold its showing a full level, but when warm after evn 1/2 hour its showing half full! Im sure it must be the same mechanically, so is it a manual oversight please?

Virtually all cars are best checked when cold and all the oil has drained to the sump.

Ideally leave it to cool right down on level ground (e.g. overnight) and then check it.

I've got a 1.2 12v, have checked it both hot and cold, neither reveals a definite oil level! Yep, the dipstick is moist above the maximum level, but it's impossible to get an actual level.

It's either too full or it's just moisture from whatever's in there!

I haven't got a clue which one it is, which is rather worrying.

Im getting definate level for sure, but very different depending on cold/warm. Done nearly 700 miles now, so the oils gone a little darker which makes it very easy to see. Its nearly run in:D What sort of economy are you getting, I seem to be making 45 mpg... not great but not too bad for an estate car!

I'm getting between 45-48 mpg indicated.

I coasted a lot as an experiment and got 50 mpg the other night.

I expect the trip computer is a little optimistic to be honest, they often are, but i've managed to get about 350 miles out of my latest fill up, and there's a tiny bit left!

Think the 1.2 gets better and better. Now at about 25,000 in mine and fuel economy is around 46-48 brim to brim and computer says around 48-50 so its only a few mpg out. Can easily get the computer to say above 50mpg most trips. Did a long motorway run of about 200miles and averaged 55mpg according to computer, driving at mainly 60 with the odd blast of overtaking, air con on and 2 passengers. Computer normally says 500 mile range when first filled but gets cold feet should be able to get 400 miles easy though.

I di a trip to Weymouth yesterday, all minor routes at less than 60 using light throttle and the computer said 58.4mpg:D At one point it got up to 59.3!

Checking oil levels can be a bit more awkward on a vehicle these days. Many manufacturers are advising to check the level with the engine hot after standing for several minutes. Problems is...with todays modern synethetic oils which are very thin, it's not easy to get that definitive level clear on the stick! Motorcycles are mostly the same in as much as it is a hot check that is required. Funny that!
