VERY HARSH front suspension 04 Octavia

Featured Replies

Hello All. New today!

I bought an 04 Octavia Ambiente 57k 1.9 TDI 130 from main dealer in August 09.

Very pleased overall BUT I can't believe how harsh the front suspension is.

It had new steering bushes in June, before I bought it. I complained about the problem. They gave it a clean bill of health! ( tyres are still legal but near to wear bars)

I can't believe any company would produce a car with suspension like this.

Can anyone please advise me if this is a Skoda trait or do I need to keep going back to the dealer?

Thanks

I think that someone must have fitted uprated front suspension to your car as the standard Octy suspension (vRS excluded) could never be described as harsh. Generally it gets described as soft and underdamped if anything.

What pressure do you have in your tyres and what size are they?

Welcome :)

It does sound like it has the wrong springs fitted.....

3rded - IMO the stock suspension gives a ride that is better, yes better, than Hydropneumatic. It does sometimes feel under-damped on the roads up here, but that's at least partly a comment on the roads!

Have a look under the arches and see if the springs are some colour other than black, and/or the damper bodies have threads on them. If so, then someone's fitted uprated suspension for sure!

Definately sounds like uprated units.

My Octavia runs uprated springs/dampers, and i would still not even class them as being close to harsh.

Very pleased overall BUT I can't believe how harsh the front suspension is.

When you mean harsh do you mean rigid (i.e no give) or do you mean it feels like it bottoms out i.e on the bump stops.

You could then argue that it is too soft and your shock or springs or both have gone and not taken up any damping effect if that makes sense.

Thanks for replies. 99.9% certain not had modified shocks. One mature owner car & I have all receipts.

Just had new steering bushes a month before I bought it (for MOT). Had dealer check it in case VRS bushes fitted?. Came back "clean bill of health". It really feels as though something is loose as another member reports previous to my report. and I can feel EVERY grid, pothole and road surface change!!

What shall I tell dealer please?

Thanks

Tell the dealer / mechanic to take it for a road test, with you in the car explaining what you feel as you are going along and hopefully they can pin point the fault.

If you are getting a loose feel is the suspension top mounts loose? or the ARB brackets?

Check for a broken suspension spring also.

If the dealer are any good they should find the fault.
