Ideas from VRs Owners

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon all

Hope everyone is doing ok on here, im after some advice and opinions. I have just had to get rid of my BMW 330Ci M sport as my new job now requires me to do a 100 mile round trip and i was lucky if i would get the car to drink under a quarter tank a day.

With such a commute i knew a diesel would have to be on the cards but im not someone that would have a "Normal Car " as it were and a mate has suggested a Fabia VRs. Right now a Fabia seems to be ticking all the right boxes as id love a hot hatch, its a diesel and everything i have read suggests that it would a be a fun drive to work as i drive mostly a and b roads each day.

I was wondering if anyone here uses the VRs for similar sort of role and what every one thinks. The other thing is i cant leave a car alone for long and i like subtle power and handling mods, would this be ok or should i leave these alone for its use as a commuter car.

Cheers for any advice guys and girls

Ian

Pretty much everything you've asked has been answered before, check out the Fabia I forums :)

But yes, would be ideal for your circumstances, just don't expect it be anywhere near as fun!

...it's all relative as far as 'fun' goes of course, but in terms of being a compromise, mine sees me right for a load of motorway trips and the odd A/B road journey for work. It won't be as fast or handle as well as a SportClio or a Corsa VXR, but you'll get more MPG...

Hi Ian,

Sounds like a Fabia vRS will suit your circumstances well, particularly if as you say you want performance and handling mods eventually. I cover a fair few miles myself, and a remap, lowering springs, rear ARB and so on keep it interesting. I'd highly recommend one

Hope that helps,

Iain.

I use my VRS for a 130 mile daily commute and I couldn't recommend it highly enough for the role. My route consists of a mix of country lanes, A roads and motorways and the refinement (for a small hatch) and economy/ power combination still amaze me after 55k miles.

Mine gets driven quickly but sypathetically and mpg seems to improve as the miles mount up - rarely below 50 mpg, often well over 55 mpg according to the on board computer,

Interestingly, I also have a BMW E46 sport coupe which I love - but ask me which of the 2 is the more fun to drive and it would be a very close call indeed.

Go for it - you won't regret it....

Take a test drive - it might answer all your questions in one hit!

It sounds like the VRS could tick all the right boxes, but it depends on how big a car you want - wouldn't an Octavia VRS be more comparable to the beemer? You'd probably still hit high 40s mpg if not more in a TDI Octavia VRS. I would warn you however that much as I like my Fabia, it isn't exactly massive fun to drive so coming from a BMW it will surely be underwhelming - it's the huge chunk of power in the midrange that is the main selling point. But then if you mod the suspension things may improve enough to keep you grinning?!

Lowered 25mm, RS4 style alloys, re-mapped to 160bhp/275lbft.

Still comfy on my 70 mile roud trip to work and back, and still returns 65mpg if driven gently :)

Thanks for all your comments so far.

and Teebs you hit the nail on the head, i went out to look at the one i had in mind and i was impressed to how much car is in what they describe as a "super mini", This. I was very impressed with the amount of grunt that the car exhibited, but most of all, the handling was grin inducing on the test drive, i cant imagine what fettled ones must go like.

So on wednesday next week, i get to pick up my first Skoda Fabia VRS. Its a 56 Plate with 40K on the clock in the black metallic (black magic is it?) Totally standard and completely unmarked :D

time to start reading up on the forums

cheers

Hello Freight,

You might consider the Octavia VRS if it's extra umphh !!!! you like?? as opposed to the smaller Fabia VRS hatchback.

Love my Fabia VRS.

Freight youve done the right thing, im on my 2nd.

Sold the first because work was selling a rep car very cheap.. but 18months and 2cars later im back in another, cant beat the economy, midrange.. etc.

To me they are a pretty special car

With all these favourable comments you can't help thinking how crazy Skoda are in not bringing out a replacement yet - they must be losing a fortune! When the time does come to sell mine I can't think of anything else on the market that will come close to the VRS for what it offers for the price. Guess I'll just have to hold onto it and keep it maintained in tip top condition.

I still see 40mpg on A/B roads even with big power/torque. Motorways are 50+mpg. Handling is go kart like after lowering 25mm, cupra bushes and a rear arb.

Just a few subtle mods and your 100 mile trip will leave a huge smile on your face every day! ;)
