Anyone fitted a VW R32 Steering wheel

Featured Replies

I like the look of that, but can't answer your questions though.

Would love to know what that steering wheel is off... not seen it fitted to anything yet!

Yeah I thought about it - Stu reckons you need an aibag controller etc. Apparently it has been done but its not easy and of course its bloody expensive - £299 buys a lot of wine! There is something called the law of diminishing returns and I reckon by the time you've bought the wheel, airbag, airbag controller and anything else you might need AND then figured out how to fit it and then find somebody to VAGCOM it its simply not worth it for a different wheel.

I would also always have that niggling doubt about the safety of the airbag...........

but thats just my paranoia I suppose! :)

Ditto. Quite nice but expensive, too!

I don't think I said you need an airbag controller :D

You may need a steering wheel controller if your current one doesn't support MFSW and you intend to fit a MFSW.

I think that one might just bolt on so long as the airbag wiring is the same.

Stu is right, it should just fit straight on as long as it doesnt have paddles or buttons

What do you mean by this VRStu? anyone else know whether the wiring is the same as the ocy2,would be worth knowing? if it's a straight swop with no other problem as it's a nice steering wheel and it states that it does come with the airbag

The airbag will have a plug which connects to the slip ring, if this plug is the same and wired in the same manner then all should be ok.

Yes i understand what you mean now.The MFSW should not be a problem as the VRS steering wheel doesn't have it.So the next thing is finding out whether the plug in the RS32 is the same as the ocy and will it fit direct into the slip ring. Also need to find out whether the R32 is the same depth as the original vrs steering wheel as if i'm right there could be an issue with hands hitting the indicator and light stalks when holding on to the steering wheel?

I'm going to get one as soon as funds allow (a Multi-function one)

The plug on the slip-ring should be the same across the VAG range I think. The Octy one is certainly the same as the Audi version so VW should be fine. The wiring pins may need moving but thats no problem.

The only issue I can see is that of dual stage vs single stage airbag wiring. My MkII Octy has a single stage bag (1 plug on it) whereas some other car VAG cars use a 2 stage bag (with 2 plugs on the air bag) - cross-fitting these will cause probems for sure.

Does anyone know what the mk5+6 Golfs use for airbags?

I don't think I said you need an airbag controller :D

Sorry Stu - I stand corrected!!! :o

Has anybody got a picture of the rear of a VRS wheel + airbag?

I'm tempted now!!

I suppose the questions that remain are:

  • diameter of rear of wheel - will it match up to housing - unkown
  • airbag connection - unknown
  • spline diameter - would imagine it would be OK as the VRS is effectivly a MK5 Golf

Whos going to be brave then?.........:D

The wheel will fit and the splines will match, I've seen them fitted in various VAG cars - the airbag conection is the only unknown I can think of.

Well i've written to Skoda and VW last night and if i get a reply i'll post the answer.

It's one smart wheel;)

Its nice but I've never driven a car with it fitted, I"m going to find a VW dealer with an R32 for a test next week. If its not so good to hold when driving I will look for a FL VRs multifunction one instead.
