Cambelt, water pump, oil service and inspection.

Featured Replies

I've just been given a quote for cambelt, kit and waterpump/G12 change of £390 inc VAT.

Also been given the option for an inspection, oil change inc filter and sump plug for £40 more assuming I supply my own oil. I get a good price on VW507 anyway, so that sounds like quite a good deal to me.

Bearing in mind it's usually £200 for a variable service down this way, does that seem like a fair main dealer price.

I think so, but would be interested to see what others pay or have been quoted.

My last PD140 variable minor service plus brake fluid change was £210 all in.

£430 doesn't sound too bad for all that work.

only £230 all in, at a seat dealer shop around

Unlikely to include all that, as the parts amount to nearly that!!!

belt kit and metal water pump fully fitted £230, at Rutherford of Earlston the local seat dealer who now does skoda as well

I phoned all my local VAG group dealers and indys, and that was a main dealer matching an indy then beating them on price for the oil change/stamp if I wanted to take them up on it. It includes using genuine OEM parts.

Where is the place quoting you £230 and does that include the cambelt or the belt and tensioners and waterpump + new G12?

Also is that £230 or £230+VAT?

I ask because according to the parts prices I was given, even with my discount the cambelt, tensioners, water pump and fluids cost about that much.

EDIT: just seen you've named them.

To get there and back would be 900 miles and 16 hours driving, which to be honest would cost more than the saving.

Sounds a pretty good deal to me Mark, especially the service on top for that price. Suppose they can save on overall labour/job time, but good to see some of the saving being passed onto the customer

Presumably to try and stem the flow of customers buggering off to indys.

Well VW are running something like that at the moment, so I guess i'll see how it all turns out when it has been done.

Was reassuring to see they mentioned needing a new sump plug (not reusing) and also new stretch bolts for the mounts.

The good indy dealers also included this, but a few of the other indy dealers I contacted didn't mention the stretch bolts and thought the sump plug would be reusable, which would have been less than ideal.

Well that was all a bit of a **** up, but sorted now.

Problems:

- VW Dealer didn't fit the water pump saying they inspected it by turning it and they don't usually change it.

- VW dealer reused the stretch bolts! When questioned the comment was that none of the fleets pay for it.

So after showing the written quote to them and leaving the car there it was all sorted:

What actually got done was:

- Replace cambelt and tensioner

- Replace water pump

- Replaced 7 stretch bolts

- replaced 1 rivet

- Replace coolant with 2* G012A8GM1 (G12 ++)

- Do an oil change with new filter and sump plug, with me supplying VW507 oil.

- Visual inspection on the car, and picked up a potential issue with alternator pulley.

A pain as I was without the car for the weekend and today in addition to the day the work was booked for.

On the plus point the dealer was helpful, didn't try to fob me off any more than most other dealers and gave a discount for the inconvenience.

Total price was a smidge over £360, which isn't bad at all.

What did get me, was that the dealer couldn't see any of the skoda information on the system so was relying on speaker to other dealers and TPS to get the correct parts :S

All in all a mixed bag, and while I won't say I won't use them again, I think for the hassle caused, I will go back to my familiar dealer even if they are slightly more.
