How much oil

Featured Replies

I have an Occty II with the 2.0 TDi PD (6 speed manual, no DPF).

I haven't checked the oil level since it was service at the end of last year (I know, not clever). When I checked it the level was just on the 'must fill' mark.

So at lunch time today I will head off to Hallfords or my local Skoda dealer to buy some oil. Quick research suggests Halfords "Halfords 5W30 VW/Audi Fully Synthetic 5L Oil" at £42 will do. Given that I'm just topping up how much am I likely to need. I don't want to buy 5 litres if 1 or 2 will suffice.

I'm assuming Halfords will be cheaper then my local Skoda dealer, but is there any reason why I should avoid Halfords?

Cheers.

An Update

Min to Max is 1L.

A 1L bottle will be fine, and I'd suggest halfords or a dealer will be similar on price. (Around £12-15 per L)

From halfords you can get the following VW507 oils:

- Mobil1 ESP (5w-30, VW507)

- Castrol Edge (5w-30, VW507) Be careful there are multiple 5w-30 versions

- Halfords own 5w-30, VW507 oil IIRC available in a 2L pack too.

Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you very much!

You may save some coppers if you try a motor factors.

Right, my local Halfords had no 1 litre packs, so I bought the Castrol Edge 5w-30 (ensuring it was the VW 507 stuff).

Having driven home this evening I checked the oil again and it appeared lower then it did yesterday (the difference between hot and cold oil I figured). The first litre went in, I checked the level again and it was filling, but not by much, so in went another 0.5 litre, and when I rechecked it was over the top of the 'do not fill' mark.

This is what the manual shows.

And this is the Dipstick from my car

Before I started filling the oil level was almost at the bottom of Section C, and while you can't see it in the image, after 1.5 litres my oil level now covers what looks like Section A and covers a lot of the tear drop shaped section above.

Have I overfilled it? and should I be worried or is there some leeway to covers idiots like me who don't realise how quickly it can fill up?

Always add oil in tiny amounts!

There is a bit of leeway, but to be fair if I'm on minimum I'd only ever fill 500ml then let it sit for 15minutes, then top up in small amounts until near the maximum.

I would think that as long as you're not over the teardrop you might get away with it; however if you have an oil extractor, I'd pull a few hundred ml out of the car until it's just below the max mark.

They can be obtained from many places, including screw fix.

i know the horse has bolted but dont think oil is an more expensive from dealer- i bought 5l of shell helix and it was cheaper than halfords and the local shell garage

4L (The VW507 shell oils come in 4L packs) came to £54 + VAT from my dealer.

When halfords sell for the £40 regions, and motor factors will get around the halfords trade prices for most people for a VW507, I'm not sure how it can be cheaper.

Obviously it varies from dealer to dealer, which is why I said it's in the same ball park.

I'm so annoyed with myself. The first litre made little difference, it was dark and cold so I put more in.

I think I'll go into work late tomorrow and in the morning walk down to the local garage and see if they can help get some of the oil out. So annoyed!

I'd call them and ask if they have an oil extractor as otherwise they're more than likely to charge you for at least 30 minutes work and a new sump plug (they are single use).

Otherwise I think i'd probably be inclined to not bother either yourself an oil extractor and DIY as it will cost less and save you should you do the same again:

Silverline Tools Oil Pumps | 104610 | Silverline 2L Oil Extractor Pump

That one is cheaper and won't cost much so you could sort it out.

Chances are that if it was warm, then when it's all cold, it might be below the level, so if the car is on the flat now, it's worth going out with a torch and checking the level.

If it's on max or below, just go with it and I'm sure the excess will burn off.

Well I've just checked it again now, and the oil is roughly level with the indentation you can see on the teardrop shape.

I will wander down to my local garage and see if I can borrow their oil extractor (can't imagine they'll be that impressed, especially if I return it with half a litre of oil in it), failing that My local Halfords (just a two mile cycle) has an oil extractor in stock for 'only' £65.

Is it simply a matter of putting the hose into the filler cap and them pumping?

If it's now level with the dimple on it then I wouldn't worry too much and just let it settle over night, check it in the morning and carry on.

Obviously that is just my opinion and not fact, and I'm not a qualified mechanic.

Again I wouldn't worry about getting an extractor now, just order a small cheap 2L one to keep in the garage. They are very useful to have :D

As susgested, I'll check it again in the morning, and don't worry, if the cat drops off on the M3 tomorrow morning I know who to blame (the idiot who rushed the job!).

And cheers for the advice.

Extended service interval oil only cost me ~£9 for a litre, from the Skoda dealer.

Used about 1/2 litre in 7000 miles.Always check fluid levels, especially before/after long runs.:(

I think you're overly reacting. A 500mil overfill (couple of mm on the dipstick) will not kill the engine.

A major overfill becomes a problem when the crank big-ends start to dip into the oil and it starts to become 'foamed' - that can result in major damage.

In your case, you'll be fine and by the sound of it the excess will be used in a week or two anyway! Just make sure you check it regularly on level ground and give it a few minutes to settle after adding oil, or running the motor.

I've got a Roomster on loan, checked the oil after sitting a few hours, was at half level, was going to top it up, left it overnight and dipped it cold, was at max level. I would dip it after an overnight to let all the oil drop into the sump

Hence my comments of well if it's just level with that thing now it's cold, just order a cheap extractor online for if you do it again and save the effort on the garage :)
