How is my router working?!?!?

Featured Replies

Just wondering really.

I'm with Tiscali (I know, but they've been fine for me) and currently using the router supplied by them (Siemens Gigaset SE587).

I've a new router on the way to replace this as it's a bit squiffy with holding connection, but I'm confused by how it's managing to connect to the internet when it does!

I'm supposed to connect on a PPPoA with username and password, but for some reason the router keeps resetting itself to IPoEoA, which isn't supposed to connect at all! However, it connects fine and often with better speed than PPPoA.

I'm confused, as if I can connect with no username and password what the hell is going on!!

Also, when the new router arrives, will it just be luck if it connects or should I try for the PPPoA with username and password?

Any help/advice greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I've had a good rummage through the tiscali forums, and yet there doesn't seem to be an explanation. Maybe it's just my one, it's been going funny for a couple of months now...

[EDIT] It's not really a connection problem, as it is connecting. It just seems to be managing it in a way it shouldn't...

Put it like this, as long as it works & it connects I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you can get better speeds, I'd change ISP. Tiscali are known for poor speeds and disconnects.

I can't get better speeds due to property location. I don't think getting 4meg ish for being in the cornish countryside is too bad :)

As for the disconnects, it's definitely the router. It also will randomly not network the PC and xbox, drop wi-fi, and various other things hence the purchase of a new one!
