My Octy 1.9 PD is about 18 months old and has recently developed a occasional tapping sound that appears to be coming from underneath the car. It happens at low speeds, low engine revs (particularly when maneuvering at low speed), when going over small bumps and occasionally at tick-over.

I've looked underneath as best I can. I see an exhaust bracket fixed to the rear of the engine/gearbox unit by a couple of screws and a rubber washer. The exhaust pipe passes through a loop on this bracket (obviously) but it doesn't appear to be fixed in place. Is this correct or has anything fallen off?

Any replies gratefully received, or indeed any idea what the noise might be. I've searched the previous posts on similar subjects already.

When the dealer converted mine to single mass flywheel and had a new clutch it also had a rattle from behind the engine down under.It worked out to be a plate/shield vibrating loose near the gearbox.Sorry to be vague as this is what i was told by the dealer.

Best thing to do is to work out how you can make the rattle appear on demand then take it to the dealer, let them hear it and tell them to sort it. If it's only 18 months old, it's still under warranty so shouldn't cost anything unless you've done 50 billion miles and it's a fair wear and tear item of course
