Oil level on the rise

Featured Replies

2006 1.9TDi Octy Mk2

Eversince it had a major service at the dealer 900 miles ago i have noticed the oil level rising in small amounts (2mm above hatched area at a time). The water level is spot on and iam not loosing any coolant (nice pink colour). There is no signs of emulsification on the dipstick or filler cap either

There is also no codes logged at all.The only thing i have noticed is it is beginning to sound much more agricultural recently and very clattery internally.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Is it burning oil? It's a 2006 model, so I doubt it would be doing.

Might also be a dumb question, but are you checking the oil level with the car cold?

Never uses any oil even between services. Now on 34K (low miles).

I check the oil after car has been in garage all night and on a level surface too.

Is the car on the same slope each time you check it?

If my car was magically producing oil, I'd be draining it off every few days and selling it. :)

HTH

How much would you say you have gained in total since your first checked the level after the service?

Its on the dead flat in the garage every time.

From the top of the hatched area i would say 5mm higher. Not quite sure what that is in oil volume.

5mm in how long?

Seems a bit odd, because the sounds like something between 100 and 200ml.

Personally I'd keep an eye on it because it might just be temperature changes, however it shouldn't be going up really.

And you have no coolant loss?

Have you smelled your oil? It's likely that it now contains diesel fuel... that's bad, and would be consistent with higher engine noise - diesel is definitely not 505.01 compatible :(

Now, as to how diesel makes into the crankcase, there are usually 2 suspects - the "tandem" pump and the oil seals on the injectors. Both items can be inspected relatively easily by a competent garage... one might need a pressure/vacuum pump to test.

So... the first step would be to try and see(smell) if there is diesel in the oil; if there is, I'd warmly recommend an immediate oil change or a tow to the nearest competent VAG engineer. Likely, you would have a diagnosis within a few hours of vehicle handover to the tech...
