TFSI Emulsified Oil

Hi everyone, Had my 56 Octavia VRS (TFSI) for about 4 months now. It's a low mileage car which only had 24k on it (now 27k).

I changed the oil and filter in September as an interim, as it wasn't due until next year and I didn't want to leave it 2 years between its oil changes. I used VW spec 5w-30 fully synth before anyone asks :P.

Anyways, I check my oil regularly - and I've noticed an increasing amount of emulsified oil under the filler cap as the weather has been getting colder. Coolant is fine, not a drop lost and it looks clean. The oil on the dipstick is also nice and clean and clear.

I have read that it could be down to short/gentle journeys, but I don't really think that applies to me - my journey to work is 45 mins each way, and while I don't thrash it all the way - I usually give it a blast on the dual carriageway.

What do you all think? Anything to worry about?

This is just condensation brought on by only using the car for short trips and the engine not getting a good run. This is perfectly normal for a car with such low mileage, what you should do is at the weekend take for a good run and give the engine a chance to burn off the condensation.

Like I said, I don't thrash it all the way but I normally get a couple of chances on the way to put my foot down...

Yes the 45 minute drive should be enough to drive off any water that gives you emulsification, assuming that is 45 minutes driving and not 45 minutes sat in traffic

As long as your engine gets up to temperature and you keep it there for about 20 minutes of driving you should be fine.

Get the car up to temperature, then give it a 20 minute run on the motorway and see what that does for it.

It's also worth checking the engine breather system is clear as that can also lead to water build up.

Do you mean the oil breather pipe that goes back to the airbox? Is that easy to find on the TFSI?

I mean the pipe that usually comes off the top of the engine, that may or may not go back into the airbox, depending on the system design.

Yeah I know what you mean, on my old Focus it used to go to the airbox - never quite understood what it was for, I think it had a fancy name.

I'll have a look this weekend :)
