Hi,

just come back from Afghan having left my car in the careful hands of the wife. I took it for a 2 hr drive the other day and noticed that every 20mins or so the ABS light and traction control light flashed 3 times. Today, well today I now have a constant ABS and Traction light. A flashing brake (hand brake) light. Engine light and the power steering light. I have lost some power assist for the steering too. Also a message appears on the MDS saying "emmission workshop".

Is my car in melt down or am I having sensor failures ? Its booked in to Skoda tomorrow for Diags as it goes.

Any advice or past experiences most welcome.

Sounds like two separate problems, both of which I have had in the last month on my PD vRS (albeit separately). It sounds like your car has developed both together!

The engine warning light and emissions message is probably down to the DPF sensor. It's a little sensor which reads back pressure before and after the DPF, and it is how the engine measures how much soot is in the filter. If it isn't reading properly then the engine management system assumes the DPF is full of soot (which in reality it probably isn't) and the engine goes into "safe mode" - hence the experienced loss of power. I called Skoda assist out for this and they fixed it (replaced the sensor and reset the system) outside my house. Since then car has ben fine.

Constant ABS/traction control light is probably part of the ABS control system malfunctioning. I had mine in the dealer for this a couple of months back and it took them 4 days to track down the problem and then rectify it, under warranty thankfully. Apparently it's a known fault. I was told it would have cost about £1500 if not under warranty!!

Just seems strange that they've happened on same day.

I'd love to know, because mine did the same thing a few weeks back, and fixed itself overnight. It threw about 20 fault codes, but the (non-VAG) garage just said that those had to be nonsense (almost certainly true) and cleared the lot. I suspect there was one relating to something like "low alternator output" in amongst all the "implausible sensor reading" type codes.

Hmm, if other bits and pieces are going haywire too then it's more likely to be electrical. Dealer diagnostics will help. Good luck!

I will put money on it its a faulty alternator giving OVER voltage, pop a meter on it and let us know what it reads, if the alternator is replaced it should clear all the faults. :-)

I hope you're right ! Gonna grab a Fluke from work tomorrow and take a reading. Out of interest what reading should I be looking for ?

Like the others, I am going with an electrical fault. The last time I saw simillar was when my battery was not charging, as the battery lost voltage the cars electrics (bmw at the time) started behaving oddly, until the car eventually run out of power and ground to a halt. Hopefully its not the regulator on the alternator, otherwise the damage done to the sensitive ecus can be permanent and require a large sum of money to fix if the car is not under warranty. Welcome back from afghan by the way.

Right.

Its been for its code read and for some reason things aint talking to one another. The diagnostic computer can't pull fault codes relating to any of the dashboard warning lights. So at the moment I'm none the wiser.

They've kept the car for a few days to rack up a nice labour bill. The technician says it all points to the ABS, but, wasn't prepared to commit !

2 days with the garage and it's having a new ECU.

£600 including labour and diagnostics. I'm happy cos i was expecting 1k+
