Octavia 2 dashboard storage box as satnav mount?

Featured Replies

I've got my Octavia II and I've got an HTC HD2 which is a phone and windows mobile pda. It can have various satnav software on it so is a very useful piece of kit. BUT, how to best attach it to the car?

In my previous Octavia II I had an HP hx4700 which was just a pda, and a mobile as well. I used an Arkon powered mount which had 2 usb out sockets, plus a smaller unbranded holder for my phone. Sadly the Arkon is a couple of inches deep, and the coiled cable looks big. When not in use, it hardly fits into the glove compartment. The hx4700 was mounted in the middle stuck to the windscreen, and it was long enough to come level with the dashboard trinkets holder. The phone was off to the right side of the steering wheel.

Now I am looking for a more elegant solution, and feel that there ought to be something that will sit in the dashboard box, so that it does not leave a tell tale ring on the windscreen and jiggle about all over the place. I cannot find anything that does the job so it may be a case of whittling a piece of wood and fitting it to some sort of clamp. Then I need to find how I can get usb power to it without draping all over the gear lever.

Before I go off on that jaunt, have any of our readers comes across anything that fits the bill?

In a previous car I wired in a female cigar lighter socket having taken the switched 12v from behind the climate control module.

Into this I connected the TomTom male end and routed the 5v power out of one of the centre air vents to an active Brodit mount I had there.

Obviously you couldn't see the wiring apart from where it came out of the air vent into the mount.

It shouldn't be too difficult to put the 5v into the top section instead.

I've been searching similar things for my sat nav.

One thread I found on here was:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/96663-tomtom-into-dashtop-box/

which has some useful suggestions (and some good photo's). I particularly like the notion of attaching a suction cup holder to the underside of the storage box lid :)

However you do it, I think it's going to involve some DIY ingenuity... I don't think you'll find any off the shelf solutions.

Thanks guys. If I ever decide on a solution, I'll post it here.

The guys on 4winmobile recommend a brodit mount, fitted like this on some car that's not a Skoda. I know, how can you take advice from anyone who doesn't run a Skoda?

I have a HTC HD2 and use a Brodit holder/charger and it's faultless.

I have it hard wired in.

It came from dsl developments.

I don't know of any other option.

edit: It's installed in my van; but I also own an Octavia, which I'm about to install satnav on a brodt holder.
