GEARBOX OIL CHANGE

Featured Replies

I want to change the gearbox oil on my fabia vrs , i now you dont normally have to

change it , but i have reached 100k now , does any one now what oil i should be using is there a castrol oil ?

Cheers

75w90 is the grade

you need a special anti-tamper 12 point spline tool to remove the plugs to drop and fill the oil

You could use something like Castrol syntrax, but any 75W-90S gear oil would be OK. I put Motul Synthese in mine because I got it at a good price off ebay. I takes about 2.4 litres, so you need to buy 3x 1litre cans.

iirc they do recommend a normal mineral oil, and not a synthetic/semi-synthetic oil

According to latest Autodata the recommendation is now synthetic.

fair enough,i was just remembering something Lummox used to say regarding the gearbox oil

i have Castrol syntrax in mine and the gearchange was no better than the standard oil

No I dont think the gearchange is any better. I guess synthetic oils were less common when the vRS was first introduced and VAG have now upgraded the specification as synthetics have become the norm.

You are sort of right, for a while there was a thinner mineral based oil to aid cold weather/engine gear changes, but thats now been superseded again by another. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Where can i get one of these tools from ?

I think it's a 12 point tamper resistant torx socket you will need but I'm not sure what size e.g. 12mm, 14mm, 16mm, 18mm etc...............

Try google for where to buy.

Look on Ebay.
