May seem a basic question but what should the standard tyre size be on a mk1 vRS? Mine has currently got 225/45R17, is this correct?

Some left the factory with that size but most had 205/50/17

Either work, 225's are cheaper owing too being a more popular size.

Ever so slightly yes (much less than 225/50's though) the car will be doing 69.73 mph on 225/45's compared to 70 mph on the 205/50's

The 50 is a percentage of the width, so a tyres size is actually:

tread width/profile %/wheel diameter

205mm / 50% /17"

Yeah like fatty said, most came with 205/50R17. This is also the correct size quoted by all Skoda documentation.

225/45's are used by alot of people though. Mainly due to cost. In theory you are reducing the tyre OD by 2.5mm.

Mine had pressure listings for both sizes on the petrol filler flap, so they much have both been OEM sizes.
