Welcome .( and the following is offered in good will in a spirit of fellow ownership -not a flaming, since you're onlytwo posts old)

The "QG1/QG2" refers to extended servicing and from posts on here is not applicable to Fabia .Somewhere on the documentation /also think it's in boot there's a list of vehicle codes , one of which will specify the service interville for your car ( QG0 ,for Fabia).

( And elsewhere on this site is a convertor for all those codes to convert Skoda ese factory codes into English(ish) )

Don't know what version you've got ,so hesitate to advise .HOWEVER ,( and no doubt someone will be along shortly to mention kittens) -there's several stickies on "Fabia Owners "Forum with lots of usefull advice ,like oil /how to do this /that -how to look for faulty door carriers - so try on there .

( Skoda discussions -Skoda Fabia owners)In the meantine -have a look roundyour handbook -try looking under "oil" -( sometimes you have to think laterally) -( in mine dated 2003 ,it's on p174) B)

Edit -to add -there's subforums for the variousmarks of Fabia -to let the mods move thisto the best one -what yera/mark is your car ?

Hi VWD, thanks for your help. My car is 06 reg Fabia 1.2 Classic 64 HP?

Since it's been moved to Fabia 1 ,and it's2006 - possibly as per my manual

Multigrade high lubricity oils - petrol engine -VW 500 00 / VW 502 00

Multigrade oils petrol engine VW 501 01

With rider that only correct at time of printing (2003).

That's only the VW spec -something to look out for on the container -as Wardy says -10W40 .Mine is a diesel one ,and I've only found VW selling anything that does -Halfrauds in my one horsetown don't stock it .Tried the one and only motor factor ,who knew what I wanted ,but didn't get enough demand for it .That'sstrange ,since Ikeep on falling over Skoda diesels of all shapes /sizes and powers ,and the local new owner driver ofshoots of our two taxi firms are almodt all Skoda diesels .

Thanks everyone 10W40 it is then. Sounds fine to me.

I think a lot of people these days spend a lot of money on supposedly sophisticated oils, when a good basic oil, changed regularly, is perfectly adequate.

I'll be in touch again when I need some help.

Thats as may be, but in this "crunchy/crisp" weather and you being a bit North of Dartford, I'd stick with 5-40 semi/fully synthetic as the North is still a bit frozen and the lower "weight" will help the starter/battery out and getthe oil around quicker. That is unless you do know that VAG 1.2 engines really need 10-40 in our current temperatures - again "look at handbook" for temperature/grade tables (if Skoda use them).

Thanks rum4mo, (where do you get these names?) I'll see what I can find around and about, although I don't want to pay an arm and a leg. It's a national sport up here. Yorkshire mantra 'HOW MUCH??!!!

Yes I understand the "Yorkshire mantra" bit, as I'm further North I'd have thought that you'd reckon that we would be tighter!! Without going overboard, I've always looked on oil as the life blood of an engine along with trying to use "proper" petrol, so if you are near a GSF outlet, then maybe buy some Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5-40 - I think it represents decent quality for its price - that is what I use in my wife's Polo 1.4 (BBY engine) as the previous oil I was using, and still use on my car was Synta Gold 5-40 was getting just too expensive even when buying at VAG shows - and now its been superceded by Synta Platinum 5-40 - even more expensive.

Sorry, not been able to get to the computer for a few days. Some of us have to keep the country going.

Thanks for the further suggestion 'rum4mo'. I'll look around and see if I can find some Fuchs Supersyn.

The trouble with me is that I'm so old I was brought up on Duckhams 20-50 and it did me for everything, cars, motorbikes, I never had a mecchanical disaster and I could always find an outlet that was cheap.

Then there was the opposite end of the spectrum, when my son was racing, it was £50 worth of Silkolene oil in the bike engine every weekend and the old stuff discarded. Total waste in my eyes, but who am I?

Duckhams 20-50 - I'm not a nipper either, that stuff was a bit above me then - I think that maybe it was the stories that it had very good (strong) cleaning powers so would maybe be best avoided with high milage car - I was more a Ford's best I seem to remember. Silkolene, now there is a funny thing, Fuchs, I think brought Silkolene into their group holding some time ago. If you are near a GSF they will either sell you the Fuchs Supersyn SL 5-40 or force you into buying what they think is more suitable (and cheaper).

Hi 'rum4mo', just got back on the computer again.

I was looking at the Supersyn on line but I thought it was quite expensive.

I popped down to my local car spares shop in the village and they had for sale Pennasol 10W40 Super Light, synthetic,5litres for £12.95. That fell right into my price bracket, (cheap), so tomorrow it is going into the car, together with a new filter, £5.95.

I think if I keep up with the oil changes regularly I should have no trouble.

I realised after I had sent the last post that it was Fuchs Silkolene. A lot of hype attached to their advertising to get the young ones to part with their money.

Thanks for the interest, regards, carbman

Good enough, frequent oil changes are a good idea, though really do check for the future if your engine really "wants" 10-40 oil as opposed to 5-40, I'd always reckon that 10-40 will be as cheap as chips as its really intended for older engines - so - owners will have shallower pockets. Getting the oil around quickly at start-up is a really good idea as is the idea of trying to leave a thin oil coating on all surfaces after switch-off (as claimed by Magnetec), I hope that you are not still living in the past where the "goal" was to always use really heavy weight oil so that it protected the engine when it was heated up fully - while leaving it without proper lubrication when cold at the point where most wear can take place! I seem to remember that in essance 100 short 5 mile trips equates to about 50000 miles at motorway speeds over 100 trips. I don't know why I added that other than to try to warn you about engine wear and maybe using cheap oil. I'll still stick with Fuchs as a cheap(ish) while remaining effective lubricating oil for a low powered engine - and I'll stick with VAG for the cheap(ish) oil filter elements.

For good-value oil you might want to try Exol Lubricants. They are the UK's biggest independent oil company, but not many people have heard of them because they sell a lot of oil to other companies who 'rebrand' it as their own.

Exol are in Birmingham, but you can buy it from local oil suppliers or online from Lube-Tech (http://www.lubetechshop.co.uk ).

5 litres of Optima LSV (a fully-synth VW 507 certificated oil, about as good as you can get) is about £25. You can buy 25 litres, delivered, for under £100. Less than £4 a litre against the £15 or so the dealer will charge you.

We used Exol all the time when I was in the trade, in BMWs, Mercs, VAGs etc. - never had a problem, and their technical dept is great if you have an application query.

Hi 'rum4mo', now I'm getting really confused.

I thought that 10W-40 was the recommended grade of oil. I purposely didn't go for the 5W-40 as I thought it would be too thin for this engine. (1.2 - 25,000 miles). You mention about a lot of short journeys. This car is mainly used by my wife to get to and from work twice (4 journeys) a day. Total 4 miles, so I guess you would use 5W-40. It's all to do with the 'synthetic' name which I thought was for high performance engines. I suppose I'll get it all sorted eventually.

Thanks for your help.

Regards carbman.
