Strange noise from rear nearside corner

Featured Replies

On the way home tonight I started to get a strange metallic / maybe grinding? sort of noise from back passenger corner of the car.

I nursed the car home listening carefully - I knew it wasn't a flat but what was it? It seemed to happen when I turned a corner & the pressure went on & off that side. It's not a loud noise.

My first fears were exhaust - but all seems ok. Something suspension related - but the 'bump' test doesn't show any difference between the two sides. A wheel bearing - have forgotten what a bad one sounds like - but I don't think it's that? The other option is a stone in the wheel somewhere - caliper or the like - I don't have a powerwasher at the moment or I would have fired in some water at pressure.

Any thoughts? I've got a bit of driving to do over the next few days & can't afford for the car to be off the road, but then neither can I afford to break down.

Maybe I am being paranoid & it'll be gone in the morning...fingers crossed !

The car only went thro' an MOT last week but I suppose like many others the state of the roads won't be helping (although I am oh so careful)

I had something similar and it was a stone rattling around on the rear suspension which JKM found when doing some work on my car.

Get the rear side jacked up on an axle stand and have a good root around the rear suspension and cross member.

Otherwise it could be a wheel bearing as you have already said

I've no axle stands, but I'll have a slide under on a sheet & have a look around tomorrow - it's pitch black now...I really am hoping against hope that it'll be a loose bit of grit or something that might wash/fall out of it's own accord. It didn't sound too loud - but was just one of those noises that isn't usually there - so you know what like. Fingers crossed. If it sounds worse tomorrow - I'll maybe try to nick in past the garage to see if they wll take a quick look at it or worst case - call Skoda Assist for advice/help - I don't really like using them for this type of thing, but it'll be their first shout in almost three years, so I probably shouldn't feel too guilty.

I work for Skoda Assist and we get called out to stones in discs on a regular basis. Don't feel bad about calling us out as this is what we get paid to do and you pay for in the price of the car.

On a more personal note, my better said to me the other dat that there is a strange grinding noise from my O/S/R rear of my vRS, don't worry my dear I told her, it's probably only a stone........ Had a closer look today and the left rear inner brake pad is metal to metal ! ! ! ! 20k on a 08 vRS.

Practice what you preach she said ! ! !

Give us a call on the 0800 number and specifically ask for a Dedicated Tech in a silver van and not the Orange van......

Cheers Car67 - bizarrely the noise has gone as quickly as it appeared - so I can only assume it was grit/a stone which dislodged itself again - much to my relief - but I'll bear your comments in mind if it returns ! My motor is approaching 20k - think I'd maybe better check those pads too !
