Featured Replies

Hi my timing chain is rattling like mad is it a hard job to do?

is there a guide available?

what parts do i need? best place to get them from?

sorry for all the questions thanks in advance

the parts are sold as a kit usually, get yourself a haynes manual its all in there.. just need sump off , timing cover off and replace chain and sprockets, correctly timed up and new gaskets for sump and timing cover, 3-4 hrs work really hardest part is removing and refitting the crank pulley nut (tight)

Just out of interest, how did you diagnose the rattle as timing chain and not tappets adjustment? I ask because i am in a similar position with my MkII Felicia, with only 45k on it !

Can anyone tell me how you go about removing/replacing the bolt? Doesn't look like theres anything substantial that you can counterhold the crank with.

Would locking the wheels in 5th gear suffice or would this put too much stress on the geartrain? (talking about a fabia 1.4 here, basicly the same engine)

Thanks, Dave.

Impact gun will do the trick usually, had a couple of tight ones though, one wouldn't hold even with the brakes full on and the car in gear. It only freed up when the extension bar I was using shattered. Usually though, they're not tough at all.

Hmm, ok, well i've got a little 'toy' compressor (you know, the lidl, aldi, B&Q £45 special type) and the assosciated imapct gun, as well as one of those 12v wheel nut remover ones. Either of these likely to get it done?

A few years ago my mums astra snapped its SOHC cam belt, we couldn't get the crank bolt out so resorted to putting a spanner on the bolt, other end resting on the chassis. Then breifly cranking the engine over. That loosened it instantly. Is doing this likely to cause any problems with this type of engine?

Dave.

the air gun or wheel gun should get it off mate otherwise its a long bar against the X member and a quick go on the ign key

Valves are a constant rattle (tap, tap kind of sound) with the engine noise and the timing chain rattle is a random noise that sounds like a jingling metal sort of noise. The timing chain can be heard more at the bottom end of the engine and the valves are heard at the top of it.

I think another Felicia I looked at had a dodgy chain then. I described it as a metal thrashing noise, mainly on the pulley side of the engine.
