VOR: Alternator grief! End of the road?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I appreciate this has come up a number of times, but ive already read the threads and havent got the info i really need.

I have a 98R felly, 1300mpi power steering model. Battery lamp coming on on way home, goes off when revs over 25k. Long story short, thanks to threads on here i am going to try the reg pack solution before shelling out on new or recon Alt.

Question i have is, the reg pack on Jorily is listed as felly 1.3. mine has no OE numbers on it, is it the same reg pack for non PS version and PS model? Ive just spent a ton on brakes to get it thru its MOT and now this. obviously theres a limit to how economically viable it is to replace the alt so gonna try the cheapest (and most posted) option first

Jorily part is here if you are familiar with it and can help at all.

Thanks in advance!

Ok...heres the update now ive had a chance to see it in daylight.

Have had the meter on the battery, batt is ok at 12.44v. Run the engine and theres no alternator output registered at all, battery warning light is on. battery recovers quickly enough. Icrease revs, and batt lamp goes dim, but still there, still no alt voltage registered on meter.

Checked conections on alt, theyre ok, as is the aux drive belt tension. so i take off the reg pack....

Sure enough, the part looks identical to the one i asked about earlier ^^^. Except the one i have just pulled off only has one carbon brush on it, yet there has quite clearly been 2 at some point. (guess until about lunchtime yesterday when the warning lamp came on?)

Anyway, now i have another issue. where did the 2nd carbon brush go???

Im ok with replacing the reg pack, can live with it being OTR for a cpl of days, but the remaining brush looks ok, not measured it but looks near enough 9-10mm protruding from the reg. im concerned that the missing one is in the body of the alternator somewhere!! will this risk a short once ive stuck the new reg pack on? or do i need the unit off and see if im lucky enough to be able to shake the thing out??

they usually just break up and fall out in tiny pieces mate i wouldn't worry about it just fire the new reg pack in and try it

As you say, the old pack having one bush means that the other one has worn out, and that this has to be the cause of the low charge problem!

Awesome thanks guys! was only concerned that the brush had come out whole. anyway...new part ordered, fingers crossed it gets here sharpish!

had all the symptoms of failing brush for a couple of weeks, and did have an output a couple of weeks ago when i first noticed the warning lamp flicker on when i was caning it

Having said all that, shouldnt i still be getting some reading across the batt terminals with it running? from other threads here it seems that 14V+ is indicative of a dodgy regulator, and the alt was pushing 14.25V when i checked it the other week.

So, if the brush/ reg is the problem, and i check the voltage across the batt with engine running its like 11.8....with a slow increase...but nothing like the 12-13 i would expect.

Or is it just that the meter i have is only giving me the battery voltage, not the DC the alt is putting out with the dodgy reg? :S

14.25 is fine, if it had been pushing out 16v+ I would be worried. Everyone thinks that a battery puts out 12v, but it doesn't, it puts out 12v under load. With no load it is more like 13-14v, so to charge it you need about 14- 14.5v.

Don't worry about the brush either, it is made of carbon (think pencil lead), and even if the remaining few mm fell into the windings, it will do no harm, and break up into small pieces and then dust eventually.

AFAIK, the alternator is standard across all the felly models, the 1.3, 1.6 and the 1.9D. Rumour has it, Skoda got a good deal on a bulk purchase!!!

cheers for that!

i always thought 14.4V was the industry standard for alternator output, but the Felly has questioned my judgement many a time already, so was prepared to listen to those with more experience with them than me!

Just hope the new reg does the job, cos i aint got the spare cash for a new alternator! been to local breakers where ive scored for bits previously, and they have a dieseler and an estate, both have diff alternators to mine

no that's not true, the 1300 alternator wont interchange across the different engines, the 1.6 and diesel ones you can swap about but be careful to look out for the current ratings, the diesel one will be 90a iirc

And the 1.3 alternator bodies, mounting points and pulley are different, depending on whether it has power steering or not.

If I was wrong I apologise, I was going by the Haynes manual which only shows one variety; and the fact someone posted on here a few months back says they were all the same (and no-one contradicted them).:S

If you DO need the full alternator, your best bet is using one of the internet based salvage search sites; I was offered several for about £40, a LOT cheaper than the £180 Jorily quote for a new one.

no offence with the contradiction! Reg pack hasnt come in the post yet :swear:

I dont mind using breakers locally, but with leccy stuff its a lottery getting one that works from a scrappy. while im on, got a knock on nearside front wheel, can feel it thru the floor when turning right, usually when on a roundabout camber its worst. Suspect its the ball joint cos its not repetitive like i would expect from driveshaft, and doesnt do it on speedbumps when driven head on, just when theres a lot of roll to that side. Coilsprings are fine, no obvious play in the strut either. I see the BJ is available seperate to the arm, but how much swearing is required to get it off? or would it be easier just to do the whole arm?

Dunno anything else about it, but a worn balljoint can cause severe and very assymetical (usually inside edge) wear to the tyre (aside from safety issues). I've seen one that was through the first steel tread belt before the (lady) owner took it to a garage!

Thats the tell tale sign, which is why i'm unsure. Treadwear is even right accross the tyre, no feathers or ply to be seen lol.

Been driving a borrowed Citroen AX while the Felly has been off the road, and im not going to worry about knocks, bangs, rattles and clunks on the Skoda anymore!!

GAWD!! There is an AX out there that hasn't fallen apart yet!!??!!:o

I went for a job once, where the "company car" was an AX; they took one look at me (6`6") and decided I was not suitable for the job!!!

(If I'd known it was an AX I would not have bothered applying!!):giggle:

the ball joint is held on origionally with 3 x 8mm tapered rivits, you need to chisel or grind the BOTTOM off them and either press them out in a vice or press with a socket over the head or you may be able to drill them if you are carefull.. new ball joint fits with 3 x 8mm bolts and nylock nuts.. 1.3 power steering alt is same as the diesel and most octavia ones you may just need to swap the pulleys over

New arm it is then lol.

That AX is a proper shed, but it was (just) more favourable than the bus :giggle:

New reg pack arrived this morning, whacked it in in 5 mins, and now i have headlamps i can see with again and no warning lamp on the dash

Hopefully that will be the last of the bother until i get chance to do sort the knock out, and tidy up the arches after a hard winter;s abuse.

Thanks for the help and advice guys, its much appreciated!
