Drive Belt

Featured Replies

Mines squeaking, I've tried everything I know, I've lubed up all the pulley's, cleaned the belt, hit it with WD40 which stops it for 5 minutes, dusted it with talc to absorb grease, again it stops for a while, and finally the 4 hour cure, I run washing up liquid along the outside edge of the belt and it shuts it up, I think it's the belt edge rubbing a pulley edge, but I'm out of ideas to shut it up for good.

it could be a seized runner i had this on a rover and it was one of the pulleys the belt runs along.

I've looked at all of them, if I run washing up liquid on the edge it shuts up for a while, I can't see any oscillation on the pulleys either, maybe it's just the belt is shoot, it's a gen VW one, but it seems all the noise is coming from the edge agaisn't the pulley, thx for the suggestion though.

like you say superbia, the rubber belt might have reached the end of its service life and the rubber is hardening up causing the squeaking or squeal......plus it probably lost its ability to remain tensioned, so i would renew it and go from there.

Take the belt off and if it's in good condition, turn it over and put it back. This usually cures belt noises.

Will it run ok with the flat edge on the pulley's Roto, and does the small aircon belt have a tensioner as well of it's own to make getting it off easier?

Belt's only done 20k, proper VAG VW one as well, so it could well be a pulley still, driving me mad tbh.

I think he means just turn the belt around.

Of course.

Of course.

There is a tensioner wheel running on the bottom run of the belt. Manual adjust, 6 AF Hex key required.

Doh, trust me, I thought you meant run it with the ribs upwards lol, you just mean turn it so what was the inside becomes the outside.

There's a CVJ theory on this as well I heard, if you switch them, the worn sides of the race will be in the opp position so you effectively are using the unworn sides once swapped over, little tip for those not wanting to spend out.

The aircon pump tensioner runs sort of in the middle of the bottom of the belt area? so it doesn't tension itself, I assume the method is to lever it and tighten the key back up?

Thx chaps.

Whilst you're in there, check that the 14 AF nut on the end of the compressor shaft is tight. These have a habit of coming off with expensive consequences...
