stiff gear change?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, back again.

Thanks for all the advice on the alternator reg pack thingmy the other week, job sorted on that one!

Anyhoo, gets in the beast the other day, and gearshift feels like i'm stirring mud. hasnt been a gradual decline, just noticeably stiff in all gears. Clutch isnt slipping and no probs getting into gear,

Any suggestions? hair is thinning by the week with this car now!

you need to free up the gearlinkage, there is a bolt and a rotating sleeve where the linkage pivots which seizes up mate, easy to do on a lift but not so easy on the floor unless you remove the linkage off the car

Cheers for that...suppose im pleased the reply wasnt "clutch is goosed" or similar. had a look at said linkage and seems to have a weep on the gaitor that goes into the gearbox. Lift is out of the question so looks like its a dirty valentines day :p

seems strange that it just happened tho, if it was seizure i would have expected it to get worse over weeks but this was literally overnight.

ok does the stick move left to right freely as usual but forwards and backwards ie 3rd to 4th stiffly?

the box will always leak where the gear rod goes in think of it as a "feature"

yeah seems ok on the horizontal, but difficult on the vertical.

thats it then, wet gets into the sleve and rusts it up to make it tight, just slacken the 13mm bolt and nut then give it a try if you are still unsure..

the bolt runs thru a sleeve which is inside a tube and the bolt clamps the sleeve to the linkage, you need to remove the clip around the rubber boot at the the end of the linkage and remove the bolt , you should then be able to drop the lower part of linkage down to reveal the sleeve sitting below the upper linkage rod..

i have a puller that i made to draw out the sleeve as they can be pretty seized, i then put it in my lathe and turn all the rust off it and fill everything with grease

Awesome mate! cheers for that. seems im not only short of a hydraulic lift, but i need a puller and lathe now too! can tell ive always had fords prior to the Felly, only ever needed a mig and hammers and screwdrivers of assorted sizes before!

Will give it a shot tomorrow, let you know how i get on :wonder:

lol well if you dont have a lathe handy.................... we used to put the sleeve in a drill and use 80 emerycloth.. i'm sure with a bit of time you can clean it up tidy with a wire brush.. as for a puller a long m8 caphead bolt and a 15mm socket will do

sure enough, was the linkage under the stick. wasnt so much corroded, just seemed bunged up with sludge (possibly acquired from recent weather?). set about the pivot points with a stiff nylon brush soaked it in 100+ spray grease and it was job done. Also noticed the bush under the gearstick gaitor was a bit of a mess but thats cleaned up with the vacuum and its all dubble cush now

next stop, oil and filter and a set of plugs, shes still got Skoda branded champion ones in, and ive had her 9k now :smirk:

Thanks for the info!

ahh you must have the early type gearchange setup then.. yes in some ways a better one too

and its all dubble cush now

:wonder: haha, this forum gets better and better

dunno what my car is supposed to be. its a 98 on an R plate, facelift grille and that, but have had bother getting parts for it on the past. some old shape ones in the scrappys have been welcome donors, but seems a lot of the felicia is common through all years. could do with an estate one tho...might keep eyes peeled for the end of the year...
