Wheel alignment checked today (again)

Featured Replies

I had the wheel alignment checked today as my steering wheel was slightly off centre when travelling in a straight line. I had a full 4WA done and the results after this was completed was a car that felt much better to drive especially at speed. The front wheel alignment was miles out, and the same with the rear axle. All have now been corrected to within recommended tollerences, but they have been unable to completely get the rear camber to within tolerence although its only slightly out.

I've heard the cars and VW's are set up for European roads rather than ours, if I get the Passat I'm gonna send it straight in for a laser.

that sounds interesting. What exactly is the main difference? you do not mean the right/left steering I hope.

I think it's more to do with camber tbh, as we drive on the other side it will make a difference, and also I think our cambers are sharper than abroad, pretty sure the roads abroad are flatter.

These are the numbers both before and after alignment:

Before:

Front:
                  LH RH Diff:
Toe -1.1mm +3.5mm +2.3mm
Camber -0.27 -0.82 +0.55
Rear:
                  LH RH Diff:
Toe +1.0mm +1.4mm +2.4mm
Camber -0.73 -0.85 +0.55

Thrust Angle: -0.03

After:
Front:
                  LH RH Diff:
Toe +0.6mm +0.6mm +1.2mm
Camber -0.36 -0.82 +0.46
Rear:
                  LH RH Diff:
Toe +0.6mm +0.6mm +1.2mm
Camber -0.70 -0.82 +0.55

Thrust Angle: -0.00

The alignment was done on a Corghi 4WA Alignment rig with full tank of diesel, tyre pressures were checked and corrected before alignment which took the guy doing it the best part of 40mins fiddling.[/font]

After driving the car for a week, I still was not happy with the alignment and the way the car felt on the road. Today I took a break out from work and went for a scheduled visit to Wheels in Motion, Chesham. The car was put onto their Hunter alignment rig, and it became apparent that the toe settings front and rear needed some work according to this setup. 50 mins later and the car feels much better, has less tendancy to tramline, and best of all the fuel economy on the journey home has jumped to 49mpg (computer). All I can say is thanks to the guys over at WIM, you have another satisfied customer.
