Mpg woes

Featured Replies

Ive got a 06 plate vrs and recently the average mpg has gone down a bit and i was wondering what it could be? I used to be able to get 52 - 55mpg but now the most i can get is 48!!! That was on a long run too! I wouldn't say i drive faswt all the time but surley i should be getting more than 48! I just got it serviced and still no chang, so i'm beginning to think it's the MAF. Anyone know how much these cost and where i can get one, or anything else that could possibly be the problem.

mine has also dropped in the last year. i could usually average high 50's and the occasional 60 during the first 6 months. then it dropped to high 40's and now im back up to low 50's with a new turbo.

very frustrating when your trying to be economical! :S

i too would like it if someone could shed some light on whats going on

I'd look at changing the air filter if it wasn't done when it was serviced - you might find that makes all the difference. Skoda's official take on it is that it only gets changed every 4 years or 60000 miles - when I bought mine it had 28000 on the clock and had just had it's second service but the air filter was the original one and the MPG was poorer than I expected - changing the filter made a big difference.

My mpg is down too; I think it's a mixture of longer idling in the mornings and more anti-freeze in the diesel.

mine doesnt get to idle, shes struck up on full throttle . warms the engine up quicker ;)

Temperature can also make a big difference to fuel economy on diesel cars also - the additives added to diesel during the winter months to lessen the chances of it waxing reduce the calorific content of it, meaning poorer economy. Cold air is also denser so more fuel is burnt, the car will also take longer to warm up during winter months which again affects economy and also in the cold weather you tend to have your heater on longer, lights on morning and evening, heated rear screen etc, meaning the alternator has to work harder, creating a slightly higher load on the engine, which requires a slight increase in fueling which equals poorer economy.

Mines down a tad too - got 400 miles from the last tank, 200 miles of town ish work and 200 miles from a long run in one day... averaged about 46mpg.

I put it down to cold weather, heaters being used all the time and bad traffic.

Yeah, but I want the bearings to last more than 3 weeks. ;)
