Columbus Sat Nav

Featured Replies

When i come to order my vRS I'm considering gettign the columbus system fitted. My main concern before shelling out an extra £1500 is whats it actually like. Are there any photos anywhere of the navigation display and does anybody know what companies maps are used (ie Navteq or teleatlas). Also does it have full postcode and TMC function to reroute you due to traffic like the vauxhall systems

Hello, the Columbus and the Bolero unit share the same touch screen display, it is a full colour screen. You will have to decide if you want to pay the extra £1500 for it if you just want it for the sat nav, which incidentally does give you dynamic route guidance via the TMC function though does not accept full British 7 character postcodes, only the 5 digit european system and Skoda say there are no plans to change that at the moment. Columbus does give you extra features as well such as the ability to play DVD's and download music onto the inbuilt hard drive rather than having to plug in an mp3 player into the aux socket or an sd card into the slot all the time. The maps used on my system are the navteq ones. There should be plenty of pictures on this site showing the system or you could try typing in Columbus satnav or VW RNS510 into you tube, they are the same system, that should give you an idea if this is what you want to go for. Hope that helps.

Ian.

Mine's absolutely excellent. The feeling that it is sitting in my box in my living room waiting for installation is enough to keep me smiling - nevermind that I haven't got the "right" car to put it in yet :)

I have to make do with YouTube vids and my imagination for now too ;)

Waiting to sell my Ambiente to get an L&K to put it in.

Sod paying £1500 dealer-fit, speak to multims on eBay and buy a second hand unit for £450 if you go to his Manchester shop. Others report that they are smart units; he delivered mine to a hotel when I was staying in Manchester (gives you £50 discount if you buy direct not from flea-bay). Unit looks cosmetically perfect, all the seals are intact on it, nothing to suggest tampering or any funny business.

cheers for the replies. the mere mention of Navteq maps has just saved me £1500 quid. I try and avoid their maps like the plague. everytime I've used navteq maps they've sent me down completely unsuitable routes, even though I've done the same journey with tomtom, or using google maps/aa route planner nd has shown me a better and quicker route.

Looks like I'll be stickign with tomtom on my iphone
