Felicia deceleration

Featured Replies

Hi all I have a 1.6 Felicia estate 99, which I have owned for almost a year, which I use every day with out any problems and am really happy with, but it has one annoying

fault that spoils the drive slightly. When I decelerate to the point were you would remove your foot off the pedal there is a pronounced drive line jolt, I can minimize it buy

being ultra gentle with the gas pedal but it is easier said then done, it happens through out the rev. range in any gear. Also sometimes when decelerating the revs hang on for a few seconds before decreasing. Also occasionally when starting from cold it idles very high but if I turn it off and restart it goes back to normal.

It accelerates cleanly through out the rev range with no hesitation,I recently took the car for its MOT and it passed its emissions. while it was on the ramp we noticed the lower gearbox mount was worn which I know is not helping the situation and am going to replace it but I think this is a effect of the problem not the cause of the problem.

I have checked the throttle cable adjustment, I have removed and cleaned the throttle body and disconnected the battery over night and it is exactly the same.

My thinking is that it might be a problem with the actual throttle body, but would be interested to hear your thoughts and advice before I start buying any parts.

Many thanks in advance Joe.

Change the mount. It's the only thing that stops the engine/box rocking in reaction to torque, and it'll make a huge difference if it's shot. It will be cause and effect.

I had this on my felly. It was the rear gearbox mount that was bad ly worn. It also cause a loud clunk with the shifting of the engine/gearbox.

It felt like a different car to drive once I replaced it.

Phil

Change the gearbox mount, and check the throttle return springs are all ok.

Hi guys thanks for the speedy replies, I will change the lower mount first as you suggest. The more I think about it the more it makes sense, its just reassuring to get your views. At the same time I am going to overhaul the gear linkages as this has excessive play and rattles slightly which was probably caused by the engine movement.

I wont be able to do the repairs until the end of the month but as soon as I do I will update the thread.

Many thanks Joe

Wish I had known this years ago! I used to get blamed for poor clutch control! :giggle:

Hi guys just to update the post I finally changed the gearbox mount as was suggested and replaced the gear lever shaft at the same time, both were badly worn the mount was split top and bottom and the U / J on the end of the selector shaft had worn very loose. It has made a difference the annoying rattle has gone and the deceleration jolt is not so harsh but was still there, so having read on this forum about realigning the throttle body after cleaning it to reset the adaptive values stored on the ECU I did a search and on one of the post it had a link to a throttle body manufacturer which suggested either have it reset by a dealer with vagcom or keep the drivers door open while you turn on the ignition to the second position and you should hear a high pitch whirring noise under the bonnet which last for about 10 seconds. I tried this and I could definitely hear the the noise under the bonnet which was separate to the fuel pump priming noise which lasts for about 5 seconds. Went for a test drive and to my amazement when I decelerate now the revs. drop down gently and also the idle is at a steady 700rpm with out fluctuating. So fingers crossed it stays like this.

It would be interesting to see if this works for other people as I have read quite a few posts with similar problems to mine.

Many thanks Joe

I once read that if you stood on one leg whilst holding the key in your left hand and the aerial in your right hand, that the engine would develop an extra 50 bhp. :giggle:

Really though, if that works it's great. Just tried it on my 1.3 mpi, but as it's a different engine it was no good.
