Common problems on Superb 1,9TDI?

Featured Replies

Hi

Because i am going to test drive a used Superb 1,9TDI tomorrow, i thought i might ask here before if there is some common things i need to look out for / ask the seller about.

Its this one i am going to testdrive:

Skoda Superb 1,9 TDI Elegance

And is it possible to change the wooden parts in the interior to fx some aluminum ones?

Best Regards

Look for wet carpets on the passenger side and look out for interior electrics that don't work.

I actually knew that one, there is a Action on the B5 and B5.5 Passats where you need to remove the a rubber gommit under the battery, and clean the one under the brake vacuum thingy.

I am taking my VCDS/Vagcom cable and a laptop with me and ask the seller if i may see if there is any errors on it.

Check CV joints and gators, check timing belt has been done, look for regular oil changes with the correct specification oil. Prone to leaky radiators especially fro the lower corners.

To be fair a quick search on this section of the forum will bring up most answers. This is a fairly well covered topic.

Well i just skimmed though the Superb MK1 forum(only 50 pages) and the things i finds the most is this:

Water in passenger side.

Controlmodule under carpet + wires and grounds.

Parking sensors

I actually work for VW so i dont mind if the timing belt has been changed, its the same as on the passats, so i kinda hope it havent been changed, so i can get the seller down in price.

Hi again

Today i tried the car, and its really nice, but the seller told me that its chipped to 170HP, does anyone know if the engine/turbo can "support" that kind of power without blowing up?

They can yes, but you need to find more info about how/where it was "chipped". A remap by someone reputable isn't much of a concern. At the other end of the scale, a cheap faux "tuning box" from eBay is to be avoided.

The owner couldnt remenber who made the OBD remap for it, because it was his son who sorted out the talk and such with the remap guy, but he promised my that he will find out who did it.

And i am pretty sure its a OBD remap, i couldnt see any suspect wires, either from the Air Mass Meter, Diesel Return Temperatur sensor, or from the PD wiring connector.

It's the same engine as in the Mk4 Golf 25th Anniversary edition, they're 150bhp as stock, but very often get remapped to 190bhp.

So 170 isn't pushing it. You say you work for VW, one of the service lads would know a fair bit about the PD lump in a Superb fella.

It cant be the same engine as in the golf, the engine is mounted the other way around.

I actually is a "grease monkey"/ service lad, but i havnt seen the AWX engine in any Passats i have ever made, and only one or 2 times have i made a Skoda Superb.

I think it is almost the same engine ....but I read somewhere less valves? 8 instead of 16 it's just swung round......they will run on 170 bhp easily and it really does bring the car alive

Its only the PQ35 and PQ46 platforms that have 16 valve diesel engines.

But i have decided to buy it, the insurance it almost as cheap as it was on my felicia.

I have the AWX engine remapped to 170. The car is so smooth now and no turbo lag on the intial pull away from lights. Tows with ease and fuel consumption is great. I live in the midlands and got 60.3mpg on a recent trip to southampton and back. I think your find if you change the oil regularly and dont drive like Lewis Hamilton the engine will do 200k without a problem.

Enjoy

In my felicia i got 16.5km/liter as a average, and its only rated at 13.1km/liter, so i am hoping for a bit more milage per liter in the superb.

BTW in denmark we use metric, so how do i convert MPG to KM/l or L/100KM?

Love Denmark. The cost of cars though is mad with your tax system. Skoda is very popular because they are cheap compared to other makes. I have a friend in Grasten and I have met your Queen ( she has a nice Audi). I have never known a country so quiet and laid back.

Will look for a conversion chart for mpg-KM/l

Kind Regards

Hi, if you don't mind me asking, I live in the Midlands too and was wondering where you got your car remapped and how much it cost? I tow a 1400kg caravan, would it have any detrimental effects to its reliability? Cheers

The AWX is the pick of the bunch. I tow more than 1400kg with a standard engine - no problems at all.

With its boat-like handling, power is not the limiting factor of the Superb. Keep the engine standard and look after it to get the long life this engine is capable of.

The Golf 150 TDI has half a ratio lower compression than the 130PS. This is to keep the cylinder pressures under control and stop cracking heads due to excessive cylinder pressures over very high mileages.

Pushing a 130 to 170 will exceed the design limits, but as long as you don't sit at full 170 PS all day long on the motorway at 120mph, you will get away with it.

That's why most people who chip diesels get away with it due to limited exposure to those out of design limit cylinder pressures.

But a lot of people have been running 130 PS TDI engnes to 170 PS with no reported problems so they seem to take it OK, but I would not touch one unless it was done by a reputable place.
