Changing Coolant Sensor. How long for engine to be cool?

Featured Replies

I am about to have a go at chaning the coolant temperature sensor/sender and obviously need to wait till the engine and coolant is cool before attempting it? I know ideally the car should be left overnight, but is 2 hours enough? Also I don't want any coolant to leak out, so again will 2 hours be enough, as I am led to believe that the system is more pressurised when hot, is this right? Any tips for the job??

You should be ok too do it now lol

You only lose a dribble.

Loosen the expansion bottle top first to let any pressure out

Just have the new temp sensor ready in one hand to put straight in when you pull the old one out. You should fit a new o-ring to the new sensor to save you having to waste time pulling the old one off the old sensor, sometimes the old o-ring can get stuck in the sensor mount so to be prepared to pull it out quickly if that happens.

part number and price?

059919501A Temperature sensor (ask for the green one not the black one)

90316802 O-Ring Seal

032121142 Retaining clip

Not sure on price but the coolant temp sensor alone is something like £29

Thanks for all the tips though.

Apologies for the possibly dumb question but is this the same part as on the Octavia '03' TDI models. Mine is also playing up and by checking out these great forums I know what is now wrong at least. If it is that green sensor then there are some being sold on ebay with 'o'ring and clip for £9.99 + shipping.

Cheers

Beware of cheap ones, go for OEM if possible. I got a Febi Bilsten one for £7.99 when mine started sticking at 70 degrees but the day after I fitted it, the car kept going into the red as if it was overheating. Took it to a garage and they showed me the sensor wasn't seating right in the mounting, they replaced it with a genuine VAG one (£28) and it worked fine... so wasted £7.99
