HTC Desire first sync questions

Featured Replies

So here is a possibly tricky question for you existing Desires owners (and any other Droid peeps). I should get my new Desire on Monday and want to sync asap (battery charged of course). I currently use Outlook for Contacts and Calendar on my PC, sync my old Windows Phone with Outlook and also have a Gmail account which has it’s calendar synced to my Outlook. So…….

Should I import my latest Outlook Contacts to my Gmail Contacts (my calendars are already sync’d) so that my Gmail Contacts and Gmail Calendar are totally up to date and then simply sync my Desire with my Gmail account. I assume this will sync both contacts and calendar? And from that point on, my phone will automatically sync with my Gmail account and hence always be sync’d with my Outlook calendar. This would mean all 3 places (PC, Gmail and Desire) would have a synchronous calendar and the Gmail and Desire would have a synchronous set of Contacts?

This leaves the odd man out as being how to sync my Outlook Contacts (on PC) with either Gmail or Desire. If I am right so far, can I either sync my Contacts between Desire and PC using USB, or Import/Export Contacts with Gmail? If this too is correct so far, can I use both methods or are their conflicts, in fact are there any conflicts between multiple syncing? Eg syncing Desire with Gmail and also with PC? Just want to try to get it right first time come it’s first sync (don’t want a hard reset because I have mucked it all up :D )

Mtia :)

Hope all that made sense.

Right you've totally blagged me with your description there but this is what I would do:

You can use a program from HTC called HTC Sync. Have a look here:

HTC Sync

This will sync both Outlook contacts and calender with your phone. Your phone will then sync with the google servers automatically. The you can uninstall Google calender sync from your PC if you wish.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Phil emoticon-0100-smile.gif I think part of what worried me was on the first boot up of the phone it asks for your Gmail details and if you don’t enter them at this point, there can be problems logging on and syncing later (at least with the Desire.). This made me worry that the first sync might automatically happen with my Google account, hence my diatribe above.

So I will enter all my details as the phone asks for them, then perform a first sync with my PC. If I understand you right, I can then sync my phone with my Google Gmail thingy and my calendars (PC, Desire and Google) will stay in sync from that point on.

Can you sync ‘Notes’ from Outlook as well as Contacts and Calendar?

Yup! Hopefully that will work out for you!

If you have any problems give me a shout and I will try to help you!

From what I understand it is just contacts and calendar as android doesn't have a native/in built notes program.

It should land tomorrow and if I get a decent charge in it, I’ll try it out. Otherwise I am off to a place where I can’t get a signal and I might not be able to sort it all out till Friday or Saturday!!! :(

Hope you get it tomorrow then! Jelous that I can't get mine ordered yet!

Let us know how you get on with it!

Will do. Not sure if I will be able to email over the next few days as I am working quite a lot and sleeping the rest of the time :D

It sounds like there are plenty of uses for peeps who want to use lots of features, but I guess that’s part of the territory (I had only just got used to Windows mobile emoticon-0140-rofl.gif )

The only app I currently want it Talking Carl, although I have seen something on the web to say it’s available :)

You see I have gone and bloody done it now!. I knew I shouldn’t have started to read the ruddy interweb. Apparently if you sync first of all to your PC, the contacts are imported as Phone contacts, This means the contacts won’t sync with your Gmail account as it requires Google contacts. Apparently a work around might be to export all your contacts to SD card and re-import them as Google contacts (what ever those are!). I am thinking I might just sync my phone with Gmail as it has my diary and my latest contacts in it. That should work shouldn’t it Phil? Then my phone and Gmail will always be synchronous. I have read that the latest 2.1 Droid works both ways. Oh I hate technology………………a bit

Oh right... That's odd.

Basically if you have all your latest contacts and calendar sync'd with your google account when you sign into your account on your phone it will automatically sync with the google server and update your phone. And yes it is a two way sync. If you add a contact on the phone or over a web browser it is sync within a couple of minutes with the servers. You would then be able to sync the phone with the PC once you have synced it for the first time with google. Hope that makes sense.

It is a bit confussling to get your head around at first but once you have it works very very well I have found!

And also about android itself... don't worry you will get on fine with it... I was a die hard windows mobile user for many years and then I went straight to android and would NEVER go back!

It’s on charge :) I am going to ring the electricity board to turn up the electrickery so I can push more voltages into the phone and charge it up faster :)

The man said I might need to sellotape all my plugs into the wall as the increase in pressure might blow them all out!!! Of to find sticky-back plastic.

well after Orange registered my 2 sin cards back to front (dongle and mobile thewrong way round.....muppets) I am now typing from my Desire.......or Dierdre as I think I will call her.

So after that last post (which was using sim card #2 I have spent nearly 3 hours on the land line to Orange as they repeatedly cancelled my sim cards and had me swap between 4 different Cards (old dongle, old phone, new dongle and new phone sim cards) every card has been swapped at some point and I have had 4 different sims working at some point on the Deisrie. The knock on from this was all my Google account stopped working and Orange swore blind that the fault was with Google. I explained that for me to have a fully working Google account for say 100 days and it working perfectly for 24 hours a day, it was a bit of a coincidence that Google went down at precisely the same time as Orange started to **** up my phone settings (say 2,400-1). Did a full reset against their advice (well the 5th Orange person I spoke to today held my hand as I deleted everything) reloaded the account and it seems to be working again.

Still spitting feathers……………

Oh and after several attempts with the new dongle and them repeatedly cancelling the sim that was working at that time in it. I now have 24 hours to find out if it will work at all.

Thanks Orange (a genuine thanks to the last lady I spoke to who was very understanding).
