Hissy gurgle from air con

Featured Replies

Quick question. When turning on or turning off the aircon I get a hissy gurgle (quiet) from under the dash. It lasts around 5 seconds and the aircon still works fine. I had it topped up last year (precautionary measure).

Just wondered if I had missed this sound before or if it is a possible problem. It is quiet - but makes the sound even if the engine is off (if ignition is turned off with aircon on).

Thanks for any ideas, Ian

Mine started doing this when it was slightly low on refridgerant, If not used regular the Gas does escape //..

Thanks. I don't use the car every day - usually just on a Saturday (and then not using the aircon every time) so that may be the cause. Is there anything I can do to keep the gas in better apart from using the aircon? Different gas perhaps?

TH

the gas i use is from halfords cooltec or something, its very good very cold and hasnt escaped yet

Different gas!? They are all just R134 at the moment, these systems run on a very low duty cycle when not in use (by design) to avoid the need to keep running them to keep the oil circulating and so the seals "happy". Gurgling after running is just the gas/lquid pressures equalising, gurgling when on load could be a shortage of charge (R134).

When in doubt, stick a pressure gauge on the aircon to check if the system charge is up to spec. Best to have done at a specialist, as pressure test results vary with temperature.
