How Can I Improve Bass From Standard Stereo?

Remove speaker grille then remove the speaker from its black plastic housing.

Behind this you will see the waterproof door skin. One of the main problems seems to be that there is no air gap behind the speaker and therefore no bass box. What seems to happen is that the bass gets killed and the polythene skin starts vibrating like a drum, interfering with and cancelling any bass.

The remedy is to cut a square flap in the door skin leaving the top of the flap intact to provide some waterproofing. Water ingress to the front door is not a huge problem anyway, I have cut a hole a month ago and have had absolutely no water ingress to the car.

Try it out before cutting the flap - check the bass to the speaker before you remove it and then check it when you are holding it away from its mount, you'll hear an immediate difference.

Once you've done this there is a 100% improvement and you'll be able to play the stereo at previously unreachable volumes.

Hi, I have a 2003 octavia L&K estate which the door speakers sound as though they knackered, would this distortion of base be due to the polythene weather protection. I have had the speakers replaced only to find the base still sounds terrible, I was considering a visit to local ice shop to see what speakers they could offer, but hopefully this will fix it.

Buy some decent speakers like all other skodas the front speakers cones are made from the bad kind of cardboard! and dont actually produce any kind of bass! go for some poly or kevlar coned speakers and give them a small amp and it will all be good! or just buy some subs!

However we now have quite a few reports (some ive fixed myself) where during heavy rain the water level builds up in the door whilst waiting to drain out of the bottom and then comes in through the speaker.

The door needs to be sealed as per workshop manuals for the drainage to work correctly.

Hi,

I know this is a massive bump, a thread from 2006... but hear me out.

To avoid the rain issue and improve air flow, couldn't you drill a hole or two in the side of the speaker ring plastic collar thing to let the air flow with out breaching the water seal behind it?
