fuel gauge stuck on half what can it be

Featured Replies

My fuel gauge is stuck at half but when I remove the key the gauge drops to empty so this rules out a dash fault. I have filled up today full tank and it still shows half a tank.

Could someone let me know where the sender unit is located as I have heared that you can unplug some connector and re-connect it and it may sort it out. Or do you guys think there is another problem.

Thanks.

I think you can gain access to the sender by lifting the back seats and accessing through the floor. I imagine the sender could well be attached to the pump....

Maybe some dirt in the fuel has jammed the float (if it has one????)

i would also be interested to know as mine wont read past 3/4's full when filled to the brim :wonder:

The fuel gauge can also be adjusted (to some degree) via Vagcom.

I remember someone said this the otherday, and followed it up by saying they then ran out of fuel twice :giggle::rofl:

I would think it is better to fix the problem at source.

My low fuel beeper and light would keep going on and off as soon as the fuel dropped to about 1/4th. I did the following, based on advise given on this forum:

Lift rear seat cushion (the portion behind the driver)

Unscrew 3 screws on a round hatch which gives access to the fuel level sender unit

Clean the gunk out gently from around the sensor

Tap the two sensors lightly

Squirt WD 40

That cured my problem.
