Passat 2.0t vs Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

I'm in the market for a new motor again, and have come back to pining for a 2.0t. The Octavia VRS petrol is top of the list so far but I'm undecided as to whether to go far a late pre-FL model or post-FL model, there is a significant used price difference.

On autotrader a FL VRS estates are advertised for about £17k whereas a passat of similar age and miles are advertised for £15k. Why is this, is the Passat a poor motor, VRS's more desirable, ...? The Passat looks a good package, tsi T engine plus more internal space than an Octy but get the feeling it's priced £2k less for a reason?

The Passat is an excellent car but is about as grey as you can get from a German marque. Basically its competent, well built and spacious but its boring. It does everything adequately and nothing outstanding. We have them at work and they are the "invisible" car - nobody minds driving them but nobody loves driving them.

Also, the 20.t Passat does not have even remote "sporting pretentions" compared to the VRS and I think you'll find the chassis of the Octy delivers a much more involving and entertaining drive while delivering at least as good if not better space. OK, the fit and finish is >quite< up to the Passat standards (despite what some blinkered people on here will tell you) but its not far off and unless you lived with both of them for a while, you'd never notice.

I had a choice of vehicles when I bought my Octy and the Passat was on the list. I bought the Octy.

Unless you have a particular requirement for a petrol engine ar do love mileage, consider a diesel. The 2.0CR is an absolute peach of an engine and with a gentle remap is right up there with the petrol in bhp figures but most importantly, you can get around 320lbft of torque out fo this engine without really trying! Even as standard, its a lovely engine to drive everyday - the "old" TDI was peaky to say the least but the CR has a very wide powerband and is actually quite "petrol" to drive! You owe it to yourself to at least have a test drive but whatever, buy the Skoda - it will make you smile a little more than the Passat!

Thanks for reply, the Octavia VRS is a great package.

I've run diesels for the past 10 years and now fancy a change to a petrol for the quieter and more reliable (cheaper to repair) engines.

Also remember that the Passat will be changed early next year whereas the current Octavia range will be around in this guise for a few years yet.

dan_the_v8man has had both, and had both remapped. Id PM him
