How to determine brake caliper type ?

Featured Replies

I'm wondering how hard it is to determine the type of brake caliper fitted to my car.

One of my front calipers ceased last Friday afternoon and I've been in a courtesy car since then !

Car inspected on Monday morning and advised that it needed a caliper..... Got a warranty which will cover it, but the warranty company

wanted to supply the new caliper rather than dealer supplied.

Didn't mind this on Monday afternoon, but w'ere now onto Thursday and they still haven't send the correct caliper yet !

Wondering if this is something the dealer can determine from the chassis no. ?

The dealer should be able to give you the exact part number from the car's chassis number. I've no idea why the garage hasn't given you this already though, especially since your car is taking up garage space and you're keeping one of their courtesy cars tied up. Most of the money they make on fitting a caliper will be on labour charges too, so it's hardly worth their while refusing on this basis.

I'm not sure that this applies to the Octy 2, but the caliper type is usually cast into the calipers on VAG cars.

As for the garage, maybe they'll make more by charging the warranty company for the hire of the courtesy car than for fitting the caliper?

Well, problem solved..... new caliper now and the car, so picking it up after work.

Not sure what the problem was when the warranty company was sourcing the part (external to dealer). They had two failed attempts, so thankfully

the dealer suggested that they order the part, hence its now on the car !

May inquire about the cost of the caliper and decide whether to get another one or go to GFS or Eurocarparts.

I think the garage has made enough out of this car....... and has cost the warranty company plenty.... Best £300 I have ever spent !
