OEM bluetooth, very strange,

Try deleting the phonebook already on the Columbus. Forget the connection on your iPhone and then they re pairing the two together.

Reset the columbus to factory settings, repaired, phonebook updates, the numbers are there, but the names have all weird entries in the names

Which way did you delete the phone book?

I think it is in the setup menu.

Press setup

Press telephone option on the screen (not the phone button)

I think it's in there from memory.

How are your contacts stored on the phone. Are they on the phone or the sim? If they are on the sim then you will get weird symbols. As I use mobileme mine are stored as per my address book on the Mac.

Also go into the Bluetooth option on your iPhone were you see the connection there is a blue arrow on the right. Press that and on the next menu press forget this device. Press yes. Then delete the phonebook from the Columbus. Then try and re connect and see if that helps. Otherwise I'm at a loss as to what is causing it.

Thanks for your help, tried what you suggested but still no luck, strange thing is the Caller ID comes through ok,

Really strange

My 3GS (updated to IoS4) has the same problem. I just get a single number in my phone book with the name of "." above it. So much for progress.

Having looked on the apple discussions site every one with BMWs and Mercs are going mad as the update has screwed everyones handsfree kit up.

Oh dear........
