Quick Q on DPF

Featured Replies

Looking at a VAG group car with a DPF (actually a Golf Bluemotion) for the missus. Am also considering Fabia Diesel.

Her driving is almost exclusively town driving, 2 mile commute and a couple of similar length trips out during the day. No dual carriageway at all.

We live at least 10 miles from the nearest motorway and there is very little in the way of decent dual carriageway near us.

Is a DPF fitted car a no-no for this scenario?

Any experience of non VAG diesels and DPF's also welcome.

You're asking for trouble buying a DPF car for this type of driving . In fact any kind of car will potentially give problems with this kind of low milage short trip type of use .You would need to change oil every 3 months if the oil is not allowed to reach working temperature say once per week .This could be achieved with a long run say 50 miles now & again. For these driving conditions an electric car is ideal.Maybe you should swap cars at least once per week ?

A petrol car would make more sense than a diesel with that kind of mileage. It takes longer for a diesel to reach working temp compared to a petroland you will see no real fuel ecomony benefits over a petrol either.

I'm pretty sure there's a disclaimer in the VW golf brochure specifically against using a car with DPF in these conditions.

Sounds like an ideal scenario for one of the new 1.2 or 1.4 TSI engines.
