Mk1 Octavia VRS - which oil & how much for oil change (getting conflicting info)

Featured Replies

I've been told to use 10w40 semi synth, and also only to use fully synth oil, I'll be doing an oil change soon, and don't know which to trust.

Which should I use, and what is the amount I need?

For the record, the car is a 02, with 131k miles.

Thanks.

Your dealer will supply both

-Fixed servicing 1 year or 10,000m - 10/40 semi

-Variable servicing - 2 years or 20,000m - 5/30 fully.

However these are only guidelines. I use 0/40 Mobil 1 and change yearly. The more the better. Synthetic is of course a better option.

How much? - untill the dipstick reads max..... :giggle:

approx 4.5 litres

5l of quantum from either the dealers or VW spares. Costs around £25.

Yep as OET states car uses near on 4.5 litres.

I use either 5-30w fully syn or 10-40w. I Never use 0-XX as I was told not recomemend for the VRS and 1.8 T cars.

If you are unsure read the manual and go by the dealership they will tell you 10-40w....

Regular oil changes are the important point with these cars also

5w40 Fully Synthetic here :)

I have run 0w-40 fully synthetic in all 3 of my previous cars (one of which had over 300k on it) and never had a problem.

Either quantum platinum or quantum longlife III if you want a better oil

Both available from skoda

Longlife III is just rebranded castrol edge 5w30

Cheers for the info folks, will pick up a service pack soon, even though there's still a few suggestions!

People using fully synth, do you find it burns much more oil as to semi? As my Accord Type R years ago went through fully synth, but when I tried it on semi, it didn't at all.

Been using Castrol EDGE 5W-30 for the past 5+ years. Obviously it's fully synthetic and meets VAG specs for both fixed and variable servicing.

It's expensive, but if you can get trade discount or a special offer then it's OK.

I dont use any of the thin 0w40 between services. Approx 6-8k

I used Castrol Edge 5w30, then Castrol Edge 5w40, now Motul 8100 X-cess 5w40 is in the car. This week i am planing to change to Motul 300V 5w40, anyone used it?

In my ownership the car used oil from almost max to almost min on the dipstick every oil change (6000-7000miles)

I'm very obsessed when I change the oil...I want to drain it much as possible. So after let it drain about 15 minutes ,I crank the engine for 1 second without starting it.

So ,every time I fill it up I use the same 4.8L

Got a source for that info?

I'm using Castrol Edge 5w/30 and it hasn't used any since the last service.

Sounds potentially risky for what might be a very small benefit. I've never heard of anyone doing this and couldn't recommend it.

:) is no risky at all,my master mechanic teacher teached me.

quantum 5w 40 platinium stuff ( or however you spell it lol) and dealer oil filters too :) watch the dealer sump plugs i got a new one and they didn't tell me they were selling washer seperate now :(

I think Ive used the same plug for years now. No need to change em also.

Rather than crank the engine just pour a little fresh oil in before reffiting the plug?

Personally I use 5-30 fully synthetic, the most important thing is to get the right spec, vw 507 for variable and I think it's 504 for the fixed servicing

If you're a noob like me, talk to Opie Oils. They're a sponsor on here, but it just so happens they're based 10 minutes up the road. They hooked me up with fully synthetic 5w30 for £25 odd with Briskoda discount. Fuchs I think it was. But honestly, cheap stuff is gash, we all know this - but expensive stuff is a minefield and everybody has an opinion.

Seriously, Opie Oils - nice people and know their stuff.

Fuchs is not a bad oil...

Ya I've dealt with Opie Oils in the past, but the only thing is because I'm in Rep Of Ireland, postage costs a fortune.

Great company to deal with, just pity about the location for me ; (

Agreed, what do you think happens for the first few secs every morning, for the cam to roll over 1 turn with no oil but what is left residually on the metal, makes no odds whatsoever, compare that to the fact that only new non contaminated oil goes back in - the blessings far outway the maledictions

I use Euro car parts for oil now, works out cheaper than opie with Briskoda discount (for 4l Castrol Edge 5W-30). At the moment they are doing 25% off making it even less still. :)

You need 4.5l so 4l is no good
