My first post, and, as the pseudonym suggests, I'm a bit far from home just now and trust me there are no Skoda dealerships around these parts! So I was wondering if any of you could enlighten me a little?

I'm looking to order a Superb Estate Elegance 170CR manual for my return. I shall add a few options, including sunset glass and am also happy to wait for Skoda to accept panoramic roof orders again. The key issue of debate is about colours: specifically Amethyst Purple v Aqua Blue. I did manage to test drive an estate back in April and was really impressed, but the car was the standard steel grey version. I know full well that it's ultimately a personal choice, but it's just that there are hardly any pictures of the Aqua Blue around and of course the tiny brochure colour charts are all but useless. I've seen plenty of pictures of the Amethyst Purple, especially as the main publicity pics on Skoda's own websites have loads of them - all making the car look pretty awesome. Also saw TopCat7's recent pics of his new car in the Panoramic Sunroof thread.

I really do not want a straight silver car though, so my question really is how subtle is the Aqua Blue? Is it a effectively a silver with a hint of blue, or is it more striking than that? Is the colour strong enough for a car of the estate's size? As I say, appreciate that it's going to be up to me in the end, but on the basis that I cannot pop down to the local garage to see for myself, I'd be grateful if anyone who owns an Aqua Blue version, or who has ordered or seen one, could offer some pics or feedback. Amethyst owners please jump in, too!

Thanks in advance . I'm glad I found the site - it's been really useful so far.

Hi, I've no pics of either colour, I'm still waiting for my Amethyst Estate to be delivered, but I did see the Aqua when the estate was launced & it does look good in it. It looked very smart indeed all polished up at the dealers. It looks very similar (colour wise) to the Passat estate in Aqua. I think I've made the right choice (for me) as I've seen passats in aqua when they are full of road grime & they look mucky whereas I dont think the Amethyst will show the grime as much - if you see what I mean? Dont get me wrong, I do intend to wash the car! but on the winter days trudging the motorways, you cant help but get it dirty...

I recently purchased the car you want in aqua blue. I, like you, had not seen one in the flesh and was happily surprised when I did. As you suspected, it's a silver with a hint of blue, although in some lights it shows more blue, like the old satin grey (strange name).

It's a good colour choice and gets away from the standard silver but has the added advantage of looking clean when it could do with one!

Get the tints and that'll finish it off nicely. Yes, it's a personal choice but I feel you'd be happier with the aqua blue, you won't be disappointed!

Don`t get me wrong, but I have to ask : why on earth do you want to buy that car as manual ? DSG is the THING today and driving is much more relaxing also. As for the colours, I never ask other people`s opinions about colours, because it`s entirely up to you what you like.

But anyway, you`ll be getting a fine car, so congratulations to you.

Thanks for the posts. I've driven automatics many times, invariably hire cars abroad in the US. In a sense I'd be happy either way, but there are a couple of issues. First, my wife's main car is a manual; the Skoda would be our first auto box and I suppose I'm wary of having both types to jump in and out of and the left foot (hers or mine!) wanting to do something and hitting the brake.... Second, is that we would be looking to keep the car for many years (current car 10 years) and again I'm wary of mechanical reliability at 7-10 years for what is a complex system, which would be expensive to fix. Hence tendency to go manual.

...or am being overly concerned?

I test drove a Superb Combi 170 DSG yet i have ordered a manual, DSG still has a long way to go before i will be buying one.

Here is an Aqua Blue Superb Combi with sunset glass and Luna's emoticon-0152-heart.gif

That actually looks quite nice! I'm pleased cos I've just ordered my wife a Fabia Estate in Aqua blue with sunset glass and silver roof rails!

Yes I think you are being overly concerned!

This is the latest incarnation of the 6 Gear DSG and reliability and smoothness just gets better.

I have the PD140 DSG in my Altea XL at the moment and the difference in smoothness is chalk and cheese.

I don't know how many miles you have done in the 10 years of your previous cars but we have many DSG's on our fleet and they have covered many a mile without any issues.

Mine has now done 70,000 Miles in 2 1/2 years with not the slightest problem, and it is not treated with any respect!

I have ordered a Superb SE Hatch with the 170DSG as when I drove it, it was so smooth and refined!

As for switching between a Manual and Auto... I know what you may think, but I swap and change (the wife has an Ibiza FR Manual) and don't even think about it no problem!

Don't even think of worrying about this - it will not be a problem! Confronted with the automatic gear shift, with no side-to-side movement in Park or Neutral, you can plant your foot on the provided rest and leave it there. Grabbing hold of the "waggly" shift (in Neutral) in your manual box will mean that you'll be reaching for the clutch without any conscious thought. The differing shapes of the gear shifts in your hand will act as a permanent reminder. :)
