Felicia/Caddy Pickup Gearbox

Featured Replies

I am currently looking for a replacement gearbox for my felicia based caddy ,unfortunately these seem to be rather rare or exceptionally expensive even for a secondhand one.As far as I can deduce my 1.9d vw engine is mated to a skoda gearbox which for the diesel is difficult to find, can anyone advise me whether I could use a 1300 gearbox, would it mate and what would be the final drive or gearing differences and would I need to use a different starter and clutch if it does fit.

Thanks in anticipation.

The gearbox is physically the same, you can swap them without modification other than the rear mounting, I believe.

Gearing is taller in the 1.9, not sure of the figures, but it's a reasonably high amount so a 1.3 box would leave you pretty revvy.

What's up with your current box?

Thanks djaychela , my current box has a broken mount on the gearbox and whilst it was driving before this fifth gear had already been lost ,I've just bought it , although by fitting the 1.3 box will allow me to get it back on the road and keep an eye out for a secondhand 1.9 box or strip the old one,I may be able to get the alloy casting welded so it may not be scrap yet but would be easier and more cost effective just to drop another box in

I have a 1.9sdi caddy pickup that crunches 2nd and 3rd and also whines like a mule when i try pull off in 1st,(input shaft bearing?) is this gearbox toast or could a gearbox centre fix it?  if it cant be fixed would a skoda felicia pickup box  fit or are they a bit different? help very much appreciated.

You really need to keep your eye on the gearbox oil if it drops fifth gear is the first one to suffer from starvation usually resulting in a wine before failure ,the rest are soon to follow it's not the easiest checking the level plenty threads on here explaining what to do I will pm you concerning a gearbox

hi pickupmike You can use the gearbox out of any 1.9 diesel felica or pickup the Volkswagen pickup is a Skoda in disguise the Volkswagen apart from the Volkswagen badge and the different grill is identical to a Skoda  felicia up to the B pillar The later models with the facelift chrome grill is no different mechanically electrically etc   apart from body changes

thanks for the reply guys, Maybe i should try changing the oil first? it only whines when im pulling off in first but it is bad! . when its cold its pretty much impossible to get it into 2nd or 3rd. if i hold it in place long enuf it will slide in with a "crunch"....

i work in a garage and the guys there said id prob be wasting my time changing the oil the way it is. but they dont know much about these. i was thinking of taking out the box and getting it off to a gearbox centre to see if they could fix it, or maybe it would be easier and cheaper to look for a gearbox from another caddy pickup or a felicia pickup as you have said?

it needs a clutch and i have tried my hand at sorting out the linkage by removing the old "bolts" part of the two linkages and replacing them with nuts and bolts but now the top of the bolt is catching on the bar that runs along side the linkage bar and its hard to get her into fifth, im going to search for a tread on here as to how its done "properly" if anyone knows of such a tread please link it to me. thanks a mil. I have a dead (crashed) Felicia 1.9d sitting on my drive in Sheffield with a gearbox that never gave me any problems, if that's of any interest. Still hoping to find a buyer based on the engine being good, but it's all going spare.

Also, my clutch was replaced about 40000 miles ago if that's any use.
