Hello all, newbie here to briskoda.net so just wanted to pop in and introduce myself.

I joined this website because I passed my driving test in October and have been looking for my first car, within the last few months. After searching high and low, and looking at different websites, I have come to the conclusion that I should get a Skoda Fabia. I was wondering if anyone can give me any advice about this car (preferably 1.2,1.4 Classic) because I found out that these are in insurance groups 1 and 2, (I'm 18 by the way) so I have to take that into consideration. Can anyone give me any pointers as to where people have found the cheapest insurance, and where it is possible to find these cars for as cheap as possible as i don't mind if they are the very first models that came out in 2000-W reg. One other thing, my postcode is in the D rating, so can anyone tell me about any experiences they may have had when insuring their cars and what you would consider to be a reasonable quote?

Thanks very much.

Hiya....

well to be honest... i went to moneysupermarket.com..

i tried the others, gocompare(grudgingly cos of stupid tv advert lol) confused etc.... but MS came in the cheapest.....

as for the car i have had a few off of ebay and they have been pretty good.... Now my one word of advice with the fabias (that i have noticed and seen) is that they sometimes run a bit lumpy, and they can be a pain to get fixed....

but skodas do have a reliable name, i have just bought an octavia VRS based on the fact that my mum started with a skoda favorit estate GLXI and that lasted her from 1993 until 2009..... with a few minor problems.... then she has just got an octavia estate.....

if you are unsure what to look for in a car, get either an independant inspection(ie rac/aa) to go with you to look at the car, or make sure that you take someone with you who knows about cars....

please dont feel im teaching you how to suck eggs.... but please make sure that you do not get caught out with a dodgy car or dodgy seller.... look on google for check lists on buying cars.... just worth a mention lol.... :)

what i have seen so far on this forum is a lot of useful information in regards to the fabias and other makes..

hope that this helps for you...

regards

Martin

First of all, thanks for the posts.

I've checked the usual websites, ebay, gumtree, autotrader, but it's hard to find one of the above mentioned models in my price range(with me being 18, I'm looking for one around £1000, preferably lower) but when I do find one, it's usually out of my travelling distance range, for example, I'm in the Midlands near Birmingham and I'll find one in London at a very good price. I was just wondering if there are any other places I could check for Skodas that are cheap and that might be closer to home.

Also, what quotes did you get for your Octavia and how old are you? Are you nearer my age, because I wanted to see what the average quotes were for Skodas for young drivers.

Welcome to Briskoda :hi:

Insurance wise, why not try Chris Knott? They are a forum sponsor and have always been the cheapest for me, even with a bunch of modifications.

Hi again.....

have you checked any car auction places??

I have travelled before from glasgow to lincolnshire to get a car before... good old mother in law thought that lincolnshire was close to glasgow??? :giggle: no comment needed there lol....

im 33 years old, got 5 years no claims and pay £462.00 a year from privilage insurance....(fully comp) its an insurance group 16d

one thing what i did before i got the VRS was to go to moneysupermarket, and the cars i liked the look of i put the reg number into moneysupermarket and got price quotes for it.... mind you had to laugh when i got quoted £3,500 to insure an evo lol....(that was the highest quote lol)

ive just had a swatch on ebay theres a few cars around the birmingham area for under a grand including a skoda octavia ambiente for £995.00 on an x plate....

as i say try the auctions they are usually pretty good... but have a good look round the car before u bid on a car....

cheers and good luck..

Just thought I'd bump this, considering I'm still in need of help.

I'm still looking for a car/insurance. I've found a 1.4 Comfort that I like the look of, but when I search for quotes using the car's reg, I get prices from £4000 upwards. Surely this can't be right. I've tried looking at Chris Knott, but they've changed their policy to only insuring drivers with at least 1 years NCB. Obviously I don't have that as I haven't driven for the past year. Still, if anyone could recommend an insurer, or give any advice, please do as I'm desperately in need of it.

Welcome!

If you can, go for the 1.2 3 cylinder engine as the 70bhp version of that is much better than the old 1.4. It's a little faster and much better on fuel. They've been around a good while now and are a solid reliable unit. You might find it gets a cheaper insurance quote.

As for insurance, it's gonna be high being a new driver :( hit those comparison sites and also try the likes of Direct Line, they might surprise you.

One tip is to add your mum as a named driver, it can bring the premium down. Don't ask me why, but it seems to work.

Good luck :)

Is that a Classic or a Comfort? Just looked it up, it seems that it is one of the newer models. Can't afford that. I'm looking at models from around 2000.

I've tried the comparison sites, it's where I've got the high quotes from. Can't add my mum, she doesn't drive. My dad does though, has had a license for 25+ years. Would it be OK adding him?

Adding any other lower-risk family member can help (parents, sister, brother, etc) as it's all about decreasing the risk of you driving the car. If you have other people on the policy then the implication is that they'll drive sometimes, and if they're driving, you're not, therefore you're not causing any risk.

Please don't confuse this with "fronting" where you take the policy out in your parents' name with you as a named driver, when you know that it's your car and you'll always be driving it. This is a different matter, and is insurance fraud, shouldn't be done!

Good luck :)

Trying to find a reliable first car that's a bit long in the tooth when you've just passed your test isn't easy. Given that you know what model you want have you tried a local Skoda dealer? There are lots in your area. Ok, so they won't have your car sitting in the forecourt with approved used status and a year's warranty attached to it but they may well have one coming in for part ex which otherwise they'd have sent to auction, chances are they serviced it and will know it's pretty much OK. They'll not make much on selling it but they would get your business for servicing and parts in future.

I pxed a 12 year old Felicia earlier this year for a Fabia at my local Skoda dealers, well looked after, 84k mileage and reliable but obviously an old car. She was parked round the side of the dealership and a bloke saw her and asked if he could buy as he was looking for a Felicia. No warranty of course but they were glad to shift the car so quickly and he's really chuffed and got a car with full service history. Worth a try!
