Towing in France

Featured Replies

Just to make any Superb owners aware who may tow in France, you now have to tow at 90 80 50kmh. Just checked and they say if the vehicle gross mass weight is higher than 3.5t then this applies.

The Mass weight is not what the vehicle is actually towing but what it can tow including the weight of the car. According to the vin plate (second number down) my car is capable of towing 3650kg. Hence it does not matter if you are towing a skate board or a caravan the reduction in speed limit applies.

Just thought this information may come in handy. I also presume this would apply to the Mk2 as well. check the Vin plate!

A Superb will not tow 3650 kg.

This figure is the gross train weight ie. trailer + vehicle. The maximum weight for a braked trailer as rated by the vehicle builder is 1600 kg.

Vehicle plates usually give the maximum axle loads front and rear + gross train weight. I'll check the details on my vehicle when it is available.

You are correct Roto 1600 is the maximum towing weight, but the gross train weight is the figure this relates too. Hence the new speed limits applys to the Superb. I think the none 4x4 Octavia's are safe though.

Le Plod just has to check the vin plate and the 3650kg is on there. So we can only tow at 90kph on motoways, 80kph on single carriageways and 50kph in town.

Just thought this may be interesting to those of us who tow across the channel.

I have edited my previous post Roto as it did look like I was saying the Superb could tow 3650kg. Sorry
