Inside light unit

I'm confused!!

(Who said that's not difficult?)

I'm talking about this bit above your head:

The large bit of shaped moulded plastic facing the camera appears to be fixed. Anyone know what is behind it?

Doing radio on Car Rallies, especially at night, I need to have a light on in the car, so to save power consumption, as the radio is a fair draw on power, I have always replaced the interior bulbs with LEDs, but I can't work out how to get the bulbs out of this unit to replace them. Tips please?

Hi Graham,

it's a blank cover plate where you would find a spectacles holder on the Elegance spec.

Just clipped in I belive.

The bit to which you refer, in my YETI (Elegance spec) is where I hide my sunspex. I never wear them, but Skoda provided the hidey-hole, so that is where they will go.

I take it you have pushed and pulled and pummelled the plastic thingy?

Course you have - you used to drive a Freelander!!!!!

The large cover where the glass holder or sunroof gear would have been comes out easily if you poke a knife into the cracks on top and pry gently. You can then see what to do with the rest. I have not gone any further than to pry it off and put it back again. The cover has a few hook type plastic tabs moulded into it.

Graham it should then be a very, very easy retro-fit to order the Elegance sunglasses holder and replace your blank panel with that! (should you want to of course)

Someone on here should be able to give you the part number!

[slightly off topic: on the new European Fiesta there is also a blank panel on the dash just above the HVAC controls. It was supposed to be a little storage area and then they found out it is too deep for people to reach into! So they just blanked it off! Then when the US Fiesta got launched they changed the dash every so slightly to get rid of this anomaly!]

George.....ppaaaaaaarp!! :giggle:

Since I wear photochromatic glasses I don't need shades, man!

Thanks for the diagrams TP, I shall have a play soon. I have several LED's to replace those!

Hi!

Please let us know how the LED replacement is working for you. I'm thinking of changing to LEDs myself, and any advice/comments/otherwise-good-info would be great.

I've been using LED's for a couple of years in the Freelanders. That had all rear lights, and front side lights, (not indicators though) plus all internal lights converted. The early LED side lights didn't last long, as they were very temperature critical, and didn't like the heat from the headlight bulbs, but later ones were much better. I nearly always buy from www.ultraleds.com. I have also just replaced all the internal bulbs in the caravan as well.

Do your photochromatic glasses work in your car? Mine never did as a result I believe of the UV filtering from the tinted glass.

Seem to work perfectly, John.

Hi!

Have you replaced the light bulbs with LEDs already?I've read that the VAG canbus system gives errors when using LED lamps (because of their low energy consumption the car believes that the bulb is broken), so are your working? I also noticed that the inside light is dimming when swithcing on and off - how are the LEDs coping with this?

Haven't done it yet. Week in France and now work, so hopefully will be able to have a look at the job after next weeks night shifts. I've also got a couple of extra boot lights to fit.

I wonder how well the bulb detector works as I found one of the rear bulbs out the other week, and nothing showed internally.

I get my glasses supplied by work, and we aren't allowed to use Specsavers, so I use an independent and it was one of the questions I asked. It appears there are 2 different systems; one does, one doesn't. Luckily mine does.

Mine from spec-save do not work in the car, do we have optician available to explain, and advise which ones will work , would be great if i could get some that i know will work when driving.

I've just bought some photochromic glasses and they don't work in the car. My prescription sunglasses do!, but if the holder is the same size as my octavia's one they wont fit in the holder.emoticon-0106-crying.gif
