Cheap way to convert manual to auto?

Featured Replies

I am basically looking for any suggestion going.

I NEED an auto I have constant pins and needles in both arms and legs and dont have the strength to lift arms above my head - changing gears is an issue. Cant afford to change cars right at the minute and I may be out of a job on health grounds anyhow if my boss gets his way so not a time to be spending loads!

So - anyone got any bright ideas on making changing gear easier? Lissy is a 1.4 mpi classic. It could be that you have found a different shape / size stick makes gears easier to find? We did start looking for a written off 1.4 auto on ebay to do a bit of pokery with that and Lissy but tbh - I like Lummox to be at home not out all hours of the day faffing with cars (even if it is my car). Anyone got a motability car with some kind of adaptation? I only get care payments so not had the option of looking at an adapted car.

Ta :)

Could you not just get an automatic for the same money as you would get for selling your car????

Cheers

Dave.

As the Stig said some weeks ago (on top gear) for one of the star presenters.. "keep it in 3rd".. lol

But seriously, searching the car like for like but in auto may have more fruitful result..

Alternatives though tbh I don't think its going to help much you could:

Get a heavier gear knob - this makes changing slightly 'lighter' feel..

Extend the shift stick - so that the throw is more but weight is less..

I think I've seen some funky gismos around this area but i assume they're not that popular thus the price will be high..

I did wonder wether making the stick longer may help. Will get Lummox to look for one for me!

I would get about a grand for Lissy perhaps... but shes had so much work done on her I know she's never gonna let me down. For a grand I cant really find anything I would trust as much as her. I can walk about 100 meters before I get inflamation in my hips and spine so I cant even get my boy to school without the car. Bit of a poopy situation as we moved here so I could walk to school and work and I could have done without Lissy to sort out getting a new car.

Unless anyone here wants to swap Lissy for their auto? :D

Another option..... Do you get disability benefit and if so is it the higher rate?? You could get a new car on the motorbility scheme they have loads of small cars with no deposit and then you just give them your disabilty benefit. Might sound like it's still costing you but bear in mind you don't pay any insurance, road tax, servicing, tyres, roadside recovery.

May be another avenue to investigate.

Cheers

Dave.

I only get care element of disability dont get the mobility element otherwise yes I would be straight out to get an automatic.

I really should have paid more attention in my electronics lectures at uni and I could have made something to do the job myself. Some kind of programable robotic arm that you train for your car where each gear is. could even made it voice activated! Anyone wanna make me one?

i still say flog it and buy an auto/DSG

The paycut I took to try and keep hold of some kind of job is more than what the cheapest auto I have seen would cost unfortunatly! And work are trying everything they can to ditch me on ill health grounds!

Let me man up the Fabia a little and use the Ibiza.
