Should I buy a petrol or diesel 4x4 estate?

I am thinking of replacing my faithful 2003 130PD Estate with a 4x4.

Lliving up a hill which gets a bit slippy from time to time, as do the lanes near me, I think four wheel drive may come in handy.

Because I do low mileage I am thinking of going for the 1.8TSI as opposed to the 2.0CR as I have an old Landy for any towing duties.

Other than the difference in mpg is there anything else I should beware of with the petrol version?

The only thing I can think of that is different is that you get a proper alloy sumpguard on the diesel but only the plastic undertray on the petrol (at least you did on a pre-FL).

Also if your are on something slippy and need to trickle along in 1st the diesel wil, whereas I doubt the petrol can.

Mileage-wise our 2.0 TDi PD does 35mpg n short journeys round town but 48mpg on the motorway at a decent speed and up to 55mpg on a steady 55mph run on back roads.

Diesels best for what you want - or it would have been before the insane technology that is the DPF, especially as you say you will be doing small mileages.

The 1.8 is a cracking engine and if you are Knighton as in Knighton Gorges it's got to be a petrol. Don't think Ray has sold many 1.8's but he knows they go bloody well.

If on the other hand Knighton Gorges is meaningless, then so is this post !!

DPF's can be removed but adds to the cost

Both are good so if going s/hand look at both & look at the overall condition of the car more than the powerplant

Just for the record its Knighton Powys so its Welsh border hills for me.

I'm currently running in my 1.8 TSI, but the early signs are good. Feels like it might be a very sporty engine. My fuel consumption is improving with each fill. Last journey of mixed motorway and rural roads returned 40 MPG. Quite happy with that.

Having had a very expensive disaster with a 1.9 CR diesel (Vauxhall) I would not touch another CR with DPF.
