IHI questions......for those who have had this turbo

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I seem to have nailed all the niggles now (fingers crossed) so I'm off to RS to have the mapping checked over.

I'm just wondering what levels of boost I should be seeing. I know the original Jabba map was for 0.8 to 1.3 bar variable with the MBC.

I've read on other forums that for reliability, 1.3 peak settling to 1.1Bar is about right and will make about 300bhp.

Others say 1.5 peak settling to 1.3 is fine.....no idea who is right.

My boost guage shows that my car is peaking at 1.4 and settling to 1 bar on the lowest MBC setting and on the middle setting it is at 1.6 peak and settling 1.2 at max rpm.

On the full MBC setting I saw 1.8 bar peak settling to 1.4 and I imediately backed off as I know that beyond the VF34.

RS say that 1.5 Bar is fine on this turbo which means either they are right and everyone else is wrong or they are wrong.

Advice before I go see them would be much appreciated!

Ron

Ron,

1.5 bar (21.8 psi) is fine as a momentary peak, however it needs to drop off to around 1.1 bar (15.9 psi). Personally I'd peak no higher than 1.3 then level off at 1.0/1.1.

As long as the map can retard the settings if things get too hot you'll be fine!!

IHI's are bl00dy good units, just know what their limitations are and don't go beyond that!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your reply, thats pretty much what the guys at RS said today. Also they reackon my boost guage over reads as the figure they logged were lower than it was showing.

Having spent a grand on this car since I bought it chasing the various niggles down (not including the new turbo the last owner had to fork out for) I went down to RS to have it all checked over with a few diagnostic power runs.

Looks like changing all the Vac lines, replacing all the breather pipes and also having the tear in the TIP repaired has breathed new life into the old girl :D

With the MBC at minimum she made 252bhp and about 260 Ft Lb

On full MBC she made 325.3bhp and about 310 Ft Lb

This is much more inline with the original Jabba figures she made back in 2005 when the conversion was first done.

on the low MBC setting there is a spike at 4200rpm which is the MBC cutting in. No idea how the JABBA MBC works or if it can be adjusted.

That's more like it!!!!!!!!!

Glad it's up and running properly again!!!! I'll dig out my old dyno plots and post them up so you can compare them.

IHI power is as smooth as a virgins thighs.......nice!!!!!!

Unlike mine which is like a nuclear bomb going off!! Woot woot!!!!!

Would be great to see your charts......

Yeah I'm chuffed......more money spent than I had in mind but having read other people BT tales (your's included) I think I got off lightly :p

It does run very well and changing all the breather pipes totally sorted the idle so its very steady which I was tolb by other was just a mapping characteristic.

Tell you what though......your car must be an animal as mine is plenty for me, can scare myselt sh*tless no probs

Cheers

Ron

Have you fitted an oil catch tank??? If you've just had all new hoses and intake pipes you really should fit one - save getting oil and cr*p in the pipes.

Plots to follow!

I havent got one yet, I'm a big fan of the OEM look and so didnt want to add a big alloy can but I suppose I could paint it ,or anodise it.

Will be taking the Jabba intake off this weekend to replace with a smoothed airbox as I'm not convinced that even with an isolater sheild that filter isnt sucking in all the super hot air coming off the IHI? Will test and see :)

The catch can is a really good thing to have! Just get a universal one off eBay and mount it below the top radiator hose out of the way.

It'll be much quieter with the old air box on.......more of a shock for your unexpecting passengers!!!!!!!!!!!

The heat shield in principal works well, however I steered clear of it as I wanted some shiny pipework!!!!!

I need to re-scan in my IHI vf34 dyno plot, but here is the Owens plot ;)

Hardly any power drop off, even at 7500rpm... AGU large ports are the way forward!!!!!

I need to get in one these type of animals too experience it

One day... :D :D

In saying that, i ran a IHI VF30 at 1.9 bar peak (Impreza though, not VAG motor) it also ran my GEMS ecu (anti lag/launch control) it took some serious stick, and never let me down.

Love the power delivery on IHI's

nice

good to see the car getting sorted Ron!

Catch cans are worth it, sakoui michi ones come black for stealth and have a gauze/filter in place to help catch the crud in the system

Catch cans are great..

Engine seems to all be sorted (touch wood) but I will get a catch can at some point.

Need to turn my attention to the paintwork before winter comes. In general she's in good shape but the bonnet and front bumper look like they've been bombarded with meteorites. Looking at the service history she covered 30K in just over a year so some heavy motorway action going on but that must also explain why at 110K she's still running very well :)

Got some clunky sounds coming from the rear and after looking over it this morning, the top suspension bearings are worn with the strut tops having 2-3mm of play...........guess I'm not done spending money yet!

Ron

rear mounts are not expensive and dont cost a lot, i use avs for this type of part, see here http://www.vwspares.co.uk/octaviasuspension_rear.php , excellen service from Andrew who works there too.

Might be worth doing your bumpstops too when you are doing these and cut them down a bit if you are lowered on coilovers (which i suspect you are).

Thanks for that link sweedish! not used them before. Car is at MB again for them to be changed as I'm mega busy this week.

Hoping that will be the last of the jobs but we'll see :)

no problems Ron, they are really good!

glad to see the car is coming on!

Got the mounts sorted, so good to not hear that F*****g rattling all the time as it was before. I was sure it was some loose trim originally!

Hoping that I might not have to spend any more for a while now but we'll see :)
